RetailTouchPoints: Today's Retail Models: Everything is Broken, But Cross-Channel Formats Are Still Fixable
We know a lot about the broken economy and the credit crunch and the money that has vanished with real estate profits and personal refinancing. But we don't know enough about a tougher problem that has driven the high profile retail failures of the past year: broken business models. Weis Goes Local for Beef
The "go local" movement, it seems clear, is catching on with consumers across the country. For most merchants, going local has meant sourcing produce from nearby farms but now Weis Markets is taking the next step and buying beef from Angus producers in its home state of Pennsylvania. How successful do you think Weis Markets will be with its Pennsylvania Proud Choice Angus Beef program? Will other grocers start to promote the local angle in categories beyond produce?

Interchange Fee Debate Goes to Capital Hill
When it comes to paying for retail purchases, the majority of consumers prefer to use plastic rather than cash. While consumers prefer the ease of paying with plastic, retailers have maintained that fees levied by banks for processing transactions are exorbitantly high and ultimately wind up being passed along in higher prices to shoppers. Is the Credit Card Fair Fee Act (H.R. 5546) the right approach to the interchange fee problem?

FDA Says Baby Bottles with BPA are Safe
Stores are already pulling containers with bisphenol A (BPA) off the shelves but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is saying that those steps may not be necessary based on available scientific evidence. Do retailers need to "err on the side of caution" when it comes to products that may possibly be harmful to consumers even if there is no definitive scientific evidence to support those concerns?

New FMI Format Has Ups and Downs
The Food Marketing Institute held its first annual meeting last week in Las Vegas under a new format in which the trade expo will be held every other year, and the reviews were decidedly mixed.
