LONDON -- Thousands of men with aggressive prostate cancerhave been offered hope by a new drug, according to a drug trialreported in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Tumours shrank inalmost 80 per cent of men and the amount of a protein in the bloodassociated with the cancer halved, showing that the one-a-day pillcalled abiraterone was remarkably powerful. Tests on 2,500 menworldwide are just starting.

OTTAWA -- Canadian Justice Minister Rob Nicholson says he isreceptive to a proposal to lift a criminal ban on betting onindividual sporting events at gambling casinos. The government hasbeen under pressure from casinos to reverse the Criminal Codeprohibition. Nicholson, however, suggested there would have to beconsensus among the provinces.

DENVER -- A Texas grand jury Tuesday indicted the leader of apolygamous sect and four followers for felony and sexual assault ona minor in the first charges to stem from a raid on the group'sTexas compound in April. Warren Jeffs, the self-proclaimed prophetand leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints, was the only one named in a statement from TexasAttorney-General Greg Abbott. Sentenced to five years in prison forbeing an accomplice to the rape of a child bride in Utah, he is inprison in Arizona awaiting trial on similar charges. Abbott'sstatement says four additional people face charges for sexualassault against girls younger than 17 and one of those faces abigamy charge. Another person faces three charges of failure toreport child abuse. During the raid in April, child protectiveservices seized more than 400 children, contending they were at riskof abuse because of the sect's belief in divinely inspired,polygamous marriages to underage girls.

The blockbusteranti-impotence pill for men appears to help some women experiencingsexual side effects while on antidepressants. Those who took Viagrain a study showed greater improvement in sexual function than womenin the placebo group. The study was funded by drug-maker Pfizer.Researchers say women are prescribed antidepressants twice as muchas men.
