Hundreds of firefighters battle Saskatchewan fires
SASKATOON --More residents have been forced to leave theirhomes in northern Saskatchewan as hundreds of firefighters battlethe 65 forest fires currently blazing in the province. Anotherbusload of 160 evacuees from the northern community of Sandy Bay,Sask., about 580 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, arrived inSaskatoon on Thursday afternoon, bringing the total of displacedresidents to almost 2,200. None of the evacuees -- being housed infacilities in Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert, Sask. -- yetknows when they might return home.

Liberals fail to respond to cease-and-desist order

Man sentenced for his role in highway chase
REGINA -- A man with a long criminal record has beensentenced to 61/2 years in prison for his role in a dangeroushighway chase that resulted in the death of a 10-year-old girl inMarch 2007. Faron Akapew wasn't driving the stolen truck thatswerved into a minivan full of people during a protracted policechase in March 2007, but the court previously found he urged theteen driver to flee police and threw objects at the pursuing patrolcars.

Tories under fire for bypassing Atlantic canada
OTTAWA -- The Conservative government is under fire forbypassing Atlantic Canada by awarding the navy's submarinein-service support contract, potentially worth $1.5 billion, to aB.C.-based consortium. Independent MP Bill Casey, who was kicked outof the Conservative caucus in March 2007, said the government has"misrepresented the contract" to unfairly favour the B.C. group."There's an agenda here to move the work to British Columbia," theHalifax-area MP said Thursday. Archeologists probe cave to learn about ancient civilization
MEXICO CITY -- Archeologists are opening a cave sealed formore than 30 years deep beneath a Mexican pyramid to look for cluesabout the mysterious collapse of one of ancient civilization'slargest cities. The soaring Teotihuacan stone pyramids, now a majortourist site about an hour outside Mexico City, were discovered bythe ancient Aztecs around 1500 AD, not long before the arrival ofSpanish explorers to Mexico. But little is known about thecivilization that built the immense city, with its ceremonialarchitecture and geometric temples, and then torched and abandonedit around 700 AD. FDA expands salmonella probe to produce from Mexico
WASHINGTON -- The investigation of a salmonella outbreak inthe United States is shifting to the southern border to encompassproduce imported from Mexico. U.S. health officials are strugglingto find the source of the outbreak linked to certain types oftomatoes that has caused a reported 922 cases of salmonella foodpoisoning in 40 states and the District of Colombia since mid-April,CNN reported. The Food and Drug Administration has alerted growersand brokers handling their products that, starting on Monday,inspectors will stop shipments from Mexico of ingredients common toMexican cuisine. Cilantro, jalapeno peppers, serrano peppers,scallions and bulb onions are among the products to be examined, CNNsaid.
