Health minister urges action on food safety
OTTAWA -- Health Minister Tony Clement says he wantsParliament to get cracking in the fall on legislation to make foodand consumer products safer. Clement was commenting on reports aboutan internal government review showing big gaps in Canada's safetychecks on imported foods and a draft plan to transfer key parts ofdomestic meat and other food inspection to industry. Clement wasspeaking at a press conference where he announced proposals totighten labelling regulations next year on prepackaged foods foringredients that cause allergies and celiac disease. The aim is toend a practice of hiding food allergens, gluten sources andsulphites in ingredients that are exempted from food labels.

Liberal leader talks fall federal election

Newfoundland seeks fight over Europe seal law
ST. JOHN'S, NL. -- Newfoundland Fisheries Minister TrevorTaylor is angry Ottawa isn't reacting forcefully to a proposedEuropean ban on seal products, which could hurt thousands of peoplewho depend on the annual hunt. The EU proposes seal products beaccepted in the EU only on guarantees that the seal has been killedas humanely as possible. Federal Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearnsaid discussions will soon start with the Europeans on defininghumanely killed. Taylor said the federal government is wasting timenegotiating, saying talks with EU to stop overfishing on the GrandBanks have failed for decades. He wants the federal government tolaunch trade action through the World Trade Organization.

Air force deals another blow to rebel forces
BOGOTA -- The Colombian air force bombed a rebel camp,killing at least 20 left-wing guerrillas in the latest blow to theinsurgency this year, the government said Wednesday. The raid onSunday allowed police to collect a large cache of guerrilla arms andexplosives, the government said in a statement.
