The anti-inflammatory drugs naproxen and celecoxib do not appear to improve cognitive function in older adults with a family history of Alzheimer's disease, and naproxen may have a slightly detrimental effect, according to an article posted online that will appear in the July 2008 print issue of Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Controlling direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising of prescription drugs has an important role to play in making prescription drugs more affordable for the overall U.S. health care system.A recent AARP study revealed that, on average, pharmaceutical manufacturer prices for the 220 brand name drugs most widely used by older Americans rose at more than two and one-half times the rate of general inflation in 2007.

The elderly are cared for by their adult children regardless of their marital status. In a unique study funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, researchers found British adult children help their elderly parents according to current need (i.e. health) rather than past behaviour. This contrasts with other countries such as the US, where parents with a history of divorce see less of their children and receive less help from them.
