Three charged in Birmingham storm drain thefts
Three men accused of stealing at least 40 city-owned storm drain covers valued at $10,000.Three Birmingham men are scheduled to appear in court Monday after being arrested in connection with the thefts of at least 40 city-owned storm drain covers, according to police reports and court records.Marcus Robinson, 28, and Donald Scott and Bradius Hall, both 20, and were arrested at CMC Recycling on Aug. 5 as they tried to sell four of the rectangular covers, according to a police report. The report states the covers are valued at $250 each. While being interviewed by a detective in the city's burglary unit, the three said that in a six-week span they took the covers from all over the city, but hit Pratt City and Titusville the hardest, the report states. The men told the detective they did this between six and 10 times, each time taking at least four of the covers -- which have City of Birmingham in large letters across the top, according to the report.Paperwork kept by GMC Recycling shows they sold the covers to that recycling center on 22 different occasions and the report states they were taken between April and July.A sergeant in the burglary unit this morning said police have recovered some of the covers, but she was not sure how many. The report states the trio stole at least $10,000 worth of the covers.
