Motorist fatally shot in Five Points West
Police do not have any suspects yetA motorist was fatally shot near the Five Points West area this evening. Police did not release the name of the victim, who was the driver of a vehicle with two other passengers. The shooting occurred about 6:30 p.m. in the South Park apartment complex at South Park Drive and South Park Terrace, said Birmingham Police West Precinct Sgt. Tracey Williams. Williams said two officers on patrol heard shots fired in the area. As they turned their vehicle around to investigate, a vehicle pulled in front of theirs. "As he was driving, he expired," Williams said. Police questioned the two other passengers in the vehicle. Police did not have any suspects as of Saturday night, Williams said.

Missing Jasper Man Located
David Pickett was reported missing by his mother June 23rd after she had not been able to contact him for two months. According to the Walker County Sheriff Pickett called his mother Thursday to let her know he was alive and well.

Pell City Officer Funeral Arrangements
Pell city police officer Greg Surles was hospitalized after a june 18th collision with an 18-wheeler. The community's hope for recorvery faded Friday morning when the 29-year old died. His funeral arrangements have been made for Sunday July 6th and Monday July 7th.

Margaret Hoelzer sets world record at Olympic Trials
Former Auburn swimmer and Huntsville native Margaret Hoelzer set a world record in the 200 backstroke at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb., on Saturday night.Hoelzer qualified for the Beijing Olympics next month in the event, just as she did earlier in the week in the 100 backstroke. Hoelzer's time of 2:06.09 broke the world record of 2:06.39 held by her former Auburn teammate and Zimbabwean Olympian Kirsty Coventry. More in Sunday's Birmingham News
