Ike expected to enter Gulf of Mexico; eventual landfall a guessing game
Mobile, Ala. -- As Hurricane Ike bore down late tonight on the Turks and Caicos Islands as a Category 4 storm with winds of 135 mph, forecasters said it was too early to tell where on the Gulf Coast the storm might land. "It could be anywhere from the Texas coast to the big bend of Florida," said Jeff Garmon, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Mobile office. "Right now there's no certainty it goes up to the northern Gulf Coast." Most models show Ike making it to the middle of the Gulf of Mexico by midday Thursday -- 250 miles south of Pensacola -- but its actual location could vary by several hundred miles east or west, Garmon said. Alabama residents should keep on eye on the revised tracks that emerge once the storm enters the Gulf, Garmon said. "As we start to get to the early part of next week we'll have to start looking at it," Garmon said. Anyone with plans for next weekend should stay flexible, he said. The National Weather Service forecast Ike to hit eastern Cuba by late Sunday or early Monday and spend as much as 36 hours over the island nation. That will likely weaken the storm substantially as it enters the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday evening, the Weather Service predicted. The storm is likely to regain strength as it enters the warm Gulf waters. In a evening bulletin, the Weather Service said that Ike, which was travelling west-southwest at about 15 mph, was being steered in that direction by a high pressure zone in the Atlantic Ocean. Another key factor in Ike's eventual path is a cold front that is moving east over the continental U.S., the Weather Service said. The front could influence when Ike begins to move north.

Swimming advisories lifted at Volanta Avenue in Fairhope, Camp Beckwith on Weeks Bay
The Alabama Department of Public Health today lifted advisories against swimming in Weeks Bay at Camp Beckwith and Mobile Bay off Volanta Avenue in Fairhope. Health officials said in a news release that water samples collected Thursday at both spots showed enterococcus bacteria levels below 104 organisms per 100 milliliters, the threshold that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers safe for swimming. Levels of enterococcus, which is not harmful itself but indicates the presence of other unhealthy bacteria, rose earlier in the week following the heavy rains associated with Hurricane Gustav, Health Department officials said.
