Two candidates seek vacant Ware school seat
The appointee will serve the balance, or about eight months, of an unexpired two-year term.By CHRIS HAMEL chamel@repub.com WARE - Two candidates have emerged for the vacant seat on the Ware School Committee. Danielle M. Souza, of Crescent Terrace, and Brian P. Winslow, of Greenwich Road, each filed letters of interest by the 4 p.m. deadline Friday. According to the information submitted by them for the post, Souza has two children in the public schools here and Winslow has one. The vacancy was created by the resignation on July 1 of Stephen A. Nathan, who won election in April to serve an unexpired two-year term on the panel. Nathan, who was an appointee in 2007 to the committee, after Karen G. Wentworth chose not to seek re-election, resigned for reasons tied to his full-time job. Committee Chairman Christopher T. Desjardins said today that he hopes to have both applicants interviewed on Wednesday, when the committee meets at Ware High School. The interviews are slated for 5:30 p.m., and Souza has confirmed that she will be present, he said. Desjardins said he was trying to reach Winslow by telephone for a confirmation. An appointment must be voted upon in joint session by the committee and the Board of Selectmen. Desjardins said the selectmen have been invited to be at the high school at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The committee's meeting, including the interviews and joint vote, will be held in open session. Any appointee must be sworn in, before formally participating in the committee's business. The appointee will serve the balance, or about eight months, of the first year of the unexpired two-year term that Nathan won in April. In order to remain in the seat for the final year of the unexpired two-year term, the appointee will have to run and win in the April 2009 town elections. In addition to Desjardins, the five-seat committee's current members are Patricia H. Goudreau, Aaron R. Sawabi and David H. Siegle. More details in The Republican tomorrow.
