Summer road projects nearly finished
The Alpena County Road Commission's summer road projects are nearing completion, with most work expected to be done by this weekend. During the commission's meeting on Tuesday, Superintendent Curt Gonyea said 1 1/4 inches of additional road overlay will be put on Werth Road and Wolf Creek bridge. There also will be new asphalt on Diamond Point Drive, he said.

County looking for CERT leader
The Alpena County Board of Commissioners is looking for a volunteer to lead the county's Citizens Emergency Response Team. During a June meeting of the county's CERT ad hoc committee, it was determined the team, which assists emergency personnel, was lingering without direction. The committee recommended advertising for a volunteer CERT leader, which was approved by the commissioners.

ARMC Behavioral Service shows off facelift
Alpena Regional Medical Center's Behavioral Health Service hosted an open house to show off its $189,000 facelift on Tuesday. The renovations include 15 bedrooms, two seclusion rooms, play therapy room, offices, courtroom, patio, recreational therapy room and new windows. In addition to the aesthetic and functional renovations, the facility has gone non-smoking.

Schuelke waives prelim exam
Greg Schuelke waived his right to a preliminary examination Tuesday morning in 88th District Court on the condition he be allowed to plead guilty in 26th Circuit Court and be sentenced under the Holmes Youthful Training Act. Schuelke, an Alpena resident, has been charged with false report or threat of bomb, which is a four year felony and/or $2,000 fine.

Grant may help trail improvements
The Alpena to Cheboygan trail may be getting ready for some improvements. Local officials are working on a grant application that could create a hard packed limestone surface on the trail, making it suitable for use all four seasons.

In an attempt to stop the mess from his son's spilled milk, Edward Olsen invented the toddler tumbler during the late 1940s in Hillman. The invention is more commonly known today as the sippy cup. The toddler tumbler was the first cup for toddlers that had a lid with a spout with holes in it.

Gas taking toll on law enforcement budgets
Record high gas prices have hurt businesses, raised food prices and stretched out family budgets. And now, those prices are responsible for headaches among law enforcement budget managers. "It's a major issue for us. It's a major expense for us, but it's something that we have no control over," said Alpena Deputy Police Chief Kim Miller.

Council tables decision on civic center
A topic first discussed 15 months ago was unanimously tabled until August by the Alpena Municipal Council during a special meeting Monday night. The council met to discuss whether to move the civic and convention center to the armory or repair the current building on Johnson Street.
