Brown trout missing the party, only two on leader board through the weekend
The first weekend of the Brown Trout Festival yielded two brownies, both caught on Sunday afternoon. Nick Alexander brought in the first brown trout which weighed in at 14 pounds. Chris Fochman brought in the second which weighed in at 13.4 pounds. Weighmaster Roger Barc said the number of brown trout are similar to the number caught during the first weekend last year.

Alpena County Fair opens this weekend

DPI hopes conversion will make it 'green'
Decorative Panels International is hoping to go green and save green by building a biorefinery at the company's plant in Alpena. The refinery would convert waste sugars generated during fiberboard manufacturing into cellulosic ethanol, which could then be sold. DPI uses a "wet" process to create fiberboard.

Counties considering regional 911
Whether a regional 911 dispatch center is realistic in Northeast Michigan should be known in October. The center would be funded in part by a $1.3 million Public Safety Inter-operable Communications grant obtained by Region 7 Homeland Security.

Building's future to be known
Alpena Municipal Council members will discuss and likely decide which direction it will take regarding the Alpena Civic and Convention Center on Monday. The discussion was originally scheduled for Aug. 4, but Mayor Carol Shafto requested it be moved up to Monday, stating the council had adequate information to discuss the issue.

Alcona candidates to speak at forum
Alcona County residents will be able to learn more about local candidates and the millage issues on the ballot for the primary election Aug. 5. An Alcona County candidate forum, sponsored by the Alpena County League of Women Voters, will take place 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Lincoln Senior Center.

Alcona set to host Relay for Life
Alcona County residents will walk next weekend to raise money for cancer awareness and remember those who lost their battle with the disease. The Alcona County American Cancer Society Relay for Life fifth annual program will take place 10 a.m. July 26, until 10 a.m. July 27 at the Alcona Community Schools track.

Busy week for ACC
Students flocked to Alpena Community College's Park Arena this week to take advantage of ACC's early registration days. The three-day early registration opportunity began on Tuesday and closed Thursday. "It's a one-stop shop here in (Park Arena)," said Admissions Director Mike Kollien.
