Eagle Scout to host vigil
On Saturday, a vigil will be held for those who have lost a loved one due to alcoholism or drug addiction. The Vigil for Lost Promise will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Alpena. Grubs wreaking havoc on lawns
Alpena residents may be interested to learn that the culprit responsible for destroying many area lawns are the larvae of the European chafer beetle. The larvae feed on grassroots, which are the most noticeable sign of their presence, but the beetles are also attracted to vegetable gardens and flower beds.

Thursday, fourth, fifth and sixth graders from eight elementary schools gathered at Alpena Community College to compete in the annual Knowledge Bowl. There were eight teams from each grade, five to six students per team and seven competing quiz sessions. The quiz sessions began at 10 a.m. and continued throughout the day.

On Wednesday, the Alpena Recreation Advisory Board held its annual organizational meeting and appointed three members to serve on a committee to update the city's recreation plan. The recreation plan needs to be updated every five years, and the current plan will expire in March 2009.

Target Alpena's board of directors discussed a possible need for an operating millage and supported a resolution to have a wind energy planning project constructed in Alpena County, during its quarterly meeting on Tuesday. Board President Craig Kus said there has been preliminary discussion regarding the millage, and said the possibility of actually proposing one is in the air.
