Menzel to step down as festival director
Tom Menzel had a three-year plan for overhauling the National Cherry Festival, and hopes to soon make more plans for other community organizations. Menzel said Tuesday he'll leave the festival when his contract expires Nov. 1, consistent with his oft-repeated pledge to step down from running his hometown festival after a three-year stint.

Ann Reed, publisher of the Traverse City Record-Eagle since 2006, resigned her position at the newspaper. Reed, 55, began her career working in classified advertising sales for the Record-Eagle more than three decades ago.

Residents remain charged up over a utility company's efforts to build an electrical substation in Elmwood Township. Wolverine Power Cooperative is seeking permission from the state to bypass township ordinances and build the facility near the corner of Bugai Road and M-72.
