Timothy Schooley, charged with ex-county attorney, givien probation
A co-defendant of former Cherokee County (Kan.) Attorney Michael Goodrich on Monday was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Wichita, Kan., to a year of probation, with two months home confinement, and fined $1,000 for blackmail. Timothy Schooley, 30, of Baxter Springs, had faced a possible maximum penalty of a year in federal prison and a fine of up to $100,000, but under a plea agreement, the U.S. attorney’s office dismissed a felony extortion charge.

Sarcoxie planning for future
SARCOXIE, Mo. — It took something falling apart to make things start to happen.A couple years ago, one of the oldest and tallest buildings in Sarcoxie’s downtown collapsed. Baxter Springs Committee recommends removing policy prohibiting employee candidates
BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — The Baxter Springs Personnel Committee on Monday decided to recommend to the City Council to remove a policy prohibiting city employees from running for elected office, said Mayor Huey York.York said the committee also will recommend that the council reinstate the policy Jan. 1, 2009.City Court Clerk Rodney Edmondson is running for Cherokee County clerk. He already is a Cherokee County commissioner. Police patrol officer David Groves is running for county sheriff.

Graham to stay free while on bond awaiting sentencing
COLUMBUS, Kan. — Aaron Graham will remain free on bond until his sentencing for first-degree murder in the Jan. 30, 2007, shooting death of Jamey Richardson.Graham, 23, of Pittsburg, pleaded guilty Friday to the crime, which includes a mandatory sentence of life in prison. He would be eligible for parole in 20 years. He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 23.The prosecution had filed the motion to revoke Graham’s bond so that he would start serving time immediately.

Prosecutor: Probe clears Miami officer
MIAMI, Okla. — The Ottawa County district attorney announced Monday that an investigation has cleared a Miami police officer of any wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a 70-year-old man June 21 while responding to an alleged assault inside an apartment house.

Solar cars take break in Neosho during race
NEOSHO, Mo. — Cars rolled Sunday night and Monday afternoon into Neosho without having made one stop for gas during a trip all the way from Texas. The 15 cars were competing in the 2008 American Solar Challenge, which pits cars built by university students in a 2,400 mile race with power supplied only by the sun.

Lamar boil order's cause traced
LAMAR, Mo. — A collapsed intake pipe led to a boil order in the city of Lamar last week, Lynn Calton, city manager said Monday.City officials said they hope the boil order affecting the town’s 4,600 residents will be lifted no later than today. Calton said the problem was discovered early Saturday and has since been corrected. He said the water system was being flushed Monday and new water samples would be drawn for testing in a Joplin laboratory.“We’ll drive them there and tell them to hurry,” Calton said. “It depends on how quickly they can do the analysis, but we’re hoping the boil order can be lifted soon.”
