Wayne County man arrested for murder of girlfriend
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office tells Nine On Your Side that they’ve arrested Herman Phillip Best for murder. The arrest stems from a report Best made to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office that his girlfriend had been injured in an argument between the two of them. Deputies found victim Martha Cater deceased. She was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the incident led to Best’s arrest. He’s placed in the Wayne County jail.

Murder suspect found dead day before NC hearing
HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina murder suspect has been found dead at his home the day before a motions hearing was scheduled to start in his murder case.The Times-News of Hendersonville reported Thursday that 61-year-old Buford Filmore Snoddy was found dead in his Henderson County home. The newspaper said Snoddy's brother, Theodore, found the body Wednesday and told authorities in a 911 call that his brother had killed himself.Buford Snoddy was charged with first-degree murder in the April 2007 shooting of his cousin, 47-year-old Katherine Hedrick of Hendersonville.Henderson County Sheriff's spokesman Charlie McDonald said Buford Snoddy was found dead of a gunshot wound outside of his home.

University of North Carolina-CH tops $300 million
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's annual fundraising efforts have topped $300 million for the first time.The News & Observer of Raleigh reports the school raised $300.3 million in the 2008 fiscal year.It's the fifth straight record-setting year for the fundraising effort. The school raised nearly $251 million last year.Fred Eshelman of Wilmington committed $10 million to the School of Pharmacy as part of a campaign that ended Dec. 31 that raised nearly $2.4 billion as part of UNC's effort to become the nation's leading public university.The William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust provided $6 million to increase the number of students in the honors program at the College of Arts and Sciences.

Hagan in Charlotte to visit with veterans
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan is visiting Charlotte to meet with local veterans.Hagan's husband is a Vietnam veteran, and two of her nephews are in the military. The Democrat has previously hosted similar events with veterans in Greensboro and Cary.Hagan will speak about the military Thursday at an American Legion post in Charlotte before traveling to Raeford for a campaign event with Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin.Both Hagan and Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole have supported increased funding for veterans' health care and benefits, including money for mental health.

Three die in wreck near Rockingham
HAMLET, N.C. (AP) - Three people have died in a wreck near Rockingham as they were returning to Surry County from Myrtle Beach, S.C.North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper M.R. Leach says the sport utility vehicle they were in flipped over on the U.S. 74 bypass Tuesday afternoon.The driver, 21-year-old Justin Andrew Tate of Mount Airy,21-year-old Crystal Nicole Newsome of Mount Airy and 22-year-old Brittany Nicole Hiatt of Evans, Ga., died in the wreck.Hiatt was originally from Mount Airy.Leach told the Winston-Salem Journal says witnesses told troopers the SUV was traveling considerably faster than the 70 mph speed limit on the highway.Leach says the vehicle ran off the left side of the road and Tate overcorrected and the SUV flipped four or five times, went over a guard rail and down a steep embankment.
