Hurricane Dolly Aftermath
The cleanup is beginning on the gulf coast of Texas, after Hurricane Dolly slammed ashore. The category two hurricane hit South Padre Island hard, and left the popular resort town in pieces during the heart of the summer vacation season. The storm lost steam and drenched the area Thursday. As Dolly inches north, much as a foot of rain is still expected and officials caution the danger has not yet passed. Winds up to 100 miles an hour ripped roofs off building and brought down power lines, and torrential rain and storm surge left many streets under water. But there was no massive flooding. The levee system along the Rio Grande River that everyone was so worried about, held. No deaths and only one serious injury have been reported, but the powerful storm rattled many tourists. The day began with power still out on the barrier island. That's making it tougher for people to assess damage and begin cleaning up.
