Flooding causes lane closures on I-40 in Durham
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Heavy storms caused flooding that closed Interstate 40 at one area of Durham early Sunday.WRAL-TV reports that all lanes of I-40 near mile marker 278 in Durham were closed early Sunday. Traffic was detoured.Lanes were closed about 1:45 a.m., with some reopened within 45 minutes. The road was clear by 5 a.m. State troopers said no accidents occurred, although the high water was a driving hazard.The flooding was caused by a storm that dumped more than 3 inches of rain in some areas Saturday.Power outages, downed trees and flooding in buildings also were reported with the storm.---Information from: WRAL-TV, http://www.wral.com

MIAMI (AP) - Tropical Storm Bertha is approaching warmer waters and is likely to strengthen during the coming days.At 11 a.m. EDT Sunday, Bertha was centered about 1,185 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands in the Caribbean.Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph with some higher gusting. Forecasters say Bertha is expected to strengthen during the next few days and could become the Atlantic season's first hurricane.The storm is moving toward the west at about 21 mph. It's still too early to say if or where Bertha will hit land.The first named storm this year, Arthur, formed in the Atlantic the day before the season officially started June 1 and soaked the Yucatan Peninsula.
