With tiny howls, gray wolf pups are back in Oregon
For two years, Russ Morgan and other biologists have howled across hundreds of miles in northeastern Oregon.But they had never gotten a response to their howls, one method biologists use to survey for gray wolves in dense forests and remote terrain in Oregon.Early Friday morning, though, wolves answered.

Central Oregon, powered by water?; 2 new projects could connect to the grid by 2010
Irrigation pipes may soon power more than agriculture in Central Oregon, as two local irrigation districts move ahead with plans to generate electricity from water flowing through their canals.Swalley Irrigation District plans to have a small hydropower plant north of Bend up and running as early as April 2009, and the Central Oregon Irrigation District could connect to the electric grid by May 2010, managers of the districts said.

Lightning strikes spark fires
More than 200 lightning strikes hit Central and Southern Oregon on Monday, sparking 13 small fires. The fires, many scattered across the Deschutes National Forest, and between Bend and Redmond, were all caught at less than one-tenth of an acre, said Lisa Clark, spokeswoman with the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center. Crews were working to contain them Monday evening.

2 are hospitalized after crash on Bend Parkway
An accident near the Revere offramp of the Bend Parkway on Sunday evening sent two people to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to a news release from the Bend Police Department.The driver, Christopher Cook, 24, of Bend, was also cited for suspicion of reckless endangering, reckless driving, criminal mischief II, driving while suspended and driving uninsured, according to the news release. At about 11 p.m., Cook was driving north on U.S. Highway 97 at a fast speed, the release stated, when he lost control of the car and crossed the center median, running into a guard rail and ending up in the southbound lanes.
