Leash rules slacken a bit; Changes affect playing in the water, hiking Broken Top Trail
Jon Calvin figured he was probably breaking the rules Wednesday afternoon when he tossed a tennis ball into the Deschutes River for two unleashed dogs."I thought this was a leash area, but I never see people out here, so I just take my chances," he said, standing in an area near Meadow Camp Picnic Area, south of Bend.

The key to a happy hike with Map Guy is to make sure the payoff is bigger than the expenditure of blood, sweat and boot leather. I suspect there‘s a little of that in most of us.In this regard, we got Lucky that Friday.Lucky Lake is a full-fledged wilderness lake in an alpine setting. It has everything the day hiker wants and needs: big green trees, blooming wildflowers and enough mosquitoes to keep you goal-oriented.

Plane crash at Sunriver kills 1
A Bakersfield, Calif., man was killed Wednesday morning when a plane crashed and burst into flames as it tried to land at Sunriver Airport.The Cessna 441 Conquest, a twin-engine turboprop, bounced on the runway as it tried to touch down about 10 a. m. before climbing briefly and then tumbling into a nearby field, according to two eyewitness accounts.

There are few things that can spoil a good backpacking trip like a bad backpack. Just ask Sarah Myers.She hiked the Appalachian Trail several years ago with a too-heavy pack. "My knees are shot," she said. Now, she spends time at her job in the REI camping department trying to persuade people not to make their bags too heavy and to use trekking poles to take some of the weight off their back.

Cool lakes house big fish; Order up big macks, large kokes at Cascade lakes
It‘s hard to find a pairing that goes better together than a Big Mac and a large Coke. But for my money, I‘ll take my big macks and large kokes from a Cascade lake.Odell Lake, Crescent and Cultus are some of the coldest, deepest lakes in the state, which makes them good habitat for a big char we call lake trout or mackinaw. Odell and Crescent, with good populations of kokanee (a landlocked sockeye salmon) produce the biggest fish. Cultus Lake has no kokanee and the macks run smaller, but here an angler can catch more, running from 17 inches up to 20 pounds.

Everyone wants a room with a view.About a decade ago, archaeologists from the University of Oregon found the structural remains of the oldest house in the West, strategically located on the south shore of Paulina Lake. It‘s not difficult to see the attraction.If the scene was even close to similar 10,000 years ago, these early inhabitants had it made. Can you imagine? Achingly blue water lapping at your doorstep. Hillsides teeming with big game. No kiosk down the road collecting your day use fees.
