Bend resident Carol Garcia, 68, didn’t like it when she saw her first grandchild, Aaron, sleeping on his back. She wondered: “What are you doing?”Every doctor she knew had told her to put her children to sleep on their tummies. Colombian climbs to first-stage victory after long trip to C.O.
It has been a long couple of days for Santiago Botero.He arrived in Bend at 6 a. m. Tuesday after spending 32 hours traveling from his native Colombia.Botero mistakenly was on a flight to North Bend on the southern Oregon Coast, and in the pre-dawn hours Tuesday he had to persuade a cab driver to take him 240 miles to Bend.

Nitrates rule is approved after 10 years of study
After a decade of study and discussion, the Deschutes County Commission on Wednesday unanimously passed an ordinance that requires property owners in the southern part of the county to reduce nitrate contamination from septic systems.The move, made to keep nitrates from seeping into the groundwater and the Deschutes River, requires property owners to upgrade existing septic systems to nitrate-reducing ones by 2022 or take other measures to reduce nitrates, such as connecting to sewers or installing composting toilets.

Court ruling favors resorts in Jefferson; Proposed projects near Metolius River have been opposed by several groups
MADRAS ’ An Oregon Court of Appeals ruling Wednesday put developers one step closer to building two destination resorts near the Metolius River.The decision says Jefferson County correctly developed its destination resort zone ’ the area where the developments are allowed ’ in 2006. It upholds an Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals decision made in February.

Deschutes commissioners approve rule to reduce nitrates
The Deschutes County Commission voted unanimously this morning to pass an ordinance requiring property owners in the southern part of the county to reduce nitrate contamination from septic systems.The vote was the culmination of more than a year of public hearings, and a decade of research on how nitrates from septic systems are seeping into the aquifer in and around La Pine and Sunriver. The ordinance, also known as the "local rule," has drawn staunch opposition from many south county residents, who do not believe there is enough evidence that a problem exists.

New terminal poised to arrive on schedule
Redmond Airport‘s $40 million terminal expansion project is on schedule and beginning to take shape, according to Airport Manager Carrie Novick.Construction crews with the project‘s general contractor, Bend-based Kirby Nagelhout Construction Co., have nearly finished excavation work and have begun pouring the foundation for the terminal‘s new 13,000-square-foot basement. When completed, the basement will house the Transportation Security Administration‘s luggage-screening equipment.

Plans for dog parks in Bend expected by the fall
The Bend Metro Park and Recreation District plans to present to the public this fall the standards for how it will select off-leash dog areas, along with proposed sites, a public education campaign and ideas for rules enforcement.Parks considered for off-leash areas in the past will be evaluated under these criteria, which were developed after district staff visited Portland‘s dog parks in late June.
