For businesses, the race is on; Annual event brings a surge of activity for many businesses in Central Oregon
The Pole Pedal Paddle is a boon for businesses that cater to the flood of racers who need their skis waxed or their bikes tuned, or who need to rent canoes or kayaks, according to local business owners who have seen sales spike in anticipation of Central Oregon‘s premier racing event Saturday.

Bank Pole Pedal Paddle include titles in each of the last four years, is not among the women‘s elite competitors expected for Saturday‘s race.Only four women ’ all from Bend ’ will compete in the elite women‘s category in this year‘s Pole Pedal Paddle, which includes alpine skiing, nordic skiing, biking, running, paddling and sprinting on a course of about 30 miles from Mount Bachelor to the finish at Bend‘s Les Schwab Amphitheater.

The owners of El Caporal opened Celina‘s Gourmet Latin Bistro on May 9 on Bend‘s east side. Chef Francisco Simental prepares soups, salads, appetizers, and entrees in the $14 to $17 range. Dishes include Talla (pan-seared salmon marinated in New Mexico chilies) and Francisco (chicken breast stuffed with pineapple, served in a creamy coconut sauce). I like my history to reach out and smack me in the face.There‘s a place on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge where yesterday becomes today and a whole long time ago looks a lot like just now. It‘s powerful and immediate, and if you‘re breathing and walking upright, the fine hairs on your arms will stand on end and move in the breeze, much like the fields of dryland wheat you drove by to get to this place.

U.S. Highway 97 reopens between Bend and Redmond
UPDATED AT 1:50 P. M. - All lanes of U. S. Highway 97 between Bend and Redmond have reopened, Deschutes County emergency officials reported.The highway had been closed for a short time about 12:45 p. m. due to a traffic crash near Gift Road. Oregon State Police were still on scene investigating and directing traffic early this afternoon, but traffic was flowing, emergency officials reported.

BendBroadband will raise caps; Residential Internet users will be allowed 100 gigabytes per month
