NAACP's sanctions unfair, S.C. says
The NAACP's call for stepped-up sanctions against South Carolina over the Confederate flag is raising charges of unfairness against the national civil rights organization. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the governing body of college sports, have sanctions in place against South Carolina because it flies the Confederate battle flag. The NCAA also has sanctions against Mississippi.Neither organization, however, penalizes Alabama, which also flies the flag. And that's unfair, some S.C. officials say.

Office plans back on drawing board
The drawing board for the proposed expansion of the Brunswick County Schools Central Office is getting a workout as board members sent administrators back to it this week. For at least the fourth time in two years, plans for the central office have been put off. Twice in 2007, county commissioners denied the schools' requests to include the $5.9 million central office plans in the general school improvement plans. And the revised plans this March - with a pricetag of $600,000 - lay rolled up on the school board's meeting table after a committee meeting. This week was no different.

Plantation owners fight to speak out
This rural community near the Pee Dee River in Georgetown County will be the staging ground for a legal battle over an issue that predates the area's historical, 1800s-era rice plantations - the First Amendment right to free speech.Underlying the Bill of Rights dispute, however, is an issue over growth and development that has divided the community. The owners of five plantations along Plantersville Road - Arundel, Breakwater, Weymouth, Rosebank and Hasty Point - filed a federal lawsuit this month against Georgetown County, claiming a new zoning law violates their free speech rights because it bans roadside signs protesting new development.

Dear Abby
Dear Abby: My half-brother, "Jace," and I had a complicated childhood. My father had an explosive temper and a disdain for children in general. He was abusive, and our mentally ill mother was absent during his rages. My parents are finally divorced now. Now, he's no longer abusive and is even fun to be around. However, he still maintains a palpable distance from Jace.Jace has two beautiful children and one more on the way. Dad has seen the oldest only once. It saddens me, and I end up overcompensating by spoiling Jace's kids with gifts.
