Bailout gets House approval
WASHINGTON - The House approved a plan Wednesday to shore up mortgage giants Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and help thousands of homeowners with troubled mortgages refinance into more affordable ones.The vote was 272-152, with South Dakota Democratic Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin voting with the majority. The legislation also includes language that would create a new, stronger regulator to oversee Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac's operations. The bill now goes to the Senate.The bill approved Wednesday would increase the companies' $2.5 billion line of credit with the federal government and allow the Treasury Department to buy an unspecified amount of stock in the companies. Those provisions were part of a plan proposed by the Bush administration July 13.

Herseth Sandlin pregnant
U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin announced Wednesday that she and her husband, former U.S. Rep. Max Sandlin, D-Texas, are expecting a baby in late December. She announced the news in an e-mail to friends and supporters."We are overjoyed to share with you some wonderful news: Max and I are expecting a baby!" she told them. "With a late-December due date, we are looking forward to a particularly blessed holiday season this year..."Herseth Sandlin, 37, first was elected to Congress in a special election to succeed Republican Rep. Bill Janklow on June 1, 2004. She won the seat in her own right in November 2004, defeating Republican State Sen. Larry Diedrich. She was re-elected in 2006, defeating Bruce Whalen.

Three jurors chosen in murder trial
LUVERNE, Minn - Lawyers in the Randy Swaney murder case chose three jurors and dismissed seven others Wednesday, the first day of jury selection.Judge Timothy Connell said the trial probably will begin Monday or Tuesday.Swaney, 36, faces several alternate first- and second-degree murder charges in the May 2001 death of Carrie Nelson. The 20-year-old was found dead on the job at a Blue Mounds State Park office; about $2,000 was reported missing.

Mother Nature didn't rain on the parade Wednesday as the Diversity Kiwanis Club sponsored a circus benefiting Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), a child abuse and neglect advocacy group.The circus was held at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds and had showings at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.The organization hoped to make $2,000 to $4,000, Zortman said.

USF to launch nursing program
The University of Sioux Falls is adding a new nursing program to its curriculum, becoming the last private college in the state to do so.A $2 million U.S. Department of Education grant is funding part of the venture. University officials announced the new program Wednesday."Our hope is to develop a nursing program that will instruct students to embrace state-of-the-art technological equipment, evidence-based practices and innovative patient care," USF President Mark Benedetto said.

Smoke in plane's cabin prompts emergency landing at Sioux Falls airport
A United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Chicago made an emergency landing Wednesday at Sioux Falls Regional Airport after smoke was reported in the cabin, United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said.The plane landed safety shortly before 6 p.m.United Flight 102 carried 182 passengers and eight crew members, McCarthy said.

Pettigrew Heights' potential discussed
Pettigrew Heights -area business owners, landowners and residents Wednesday saw a vision of how the neighborhood could look someday.Architect Dick Dempster and intern Ryan Huber of Architecture Inc. gave a futuristic presentation on beautification ideas, such as a pedestrian overpass with a sign reading "Pettigrew Heights" at 11th Street and Prairie Avenue.Street banners could be attached to light poles, Dempster said. Both 10th and 11th streets showed tree-lined boulevards.

Senators push safety on reservations
WASHINGTON - A bipartisan group of senators, including Republican John Thune and Democrat Tim Johnson of South Dakota, introduced legislation Wednesday that seeks to strengthen public safety on the nation's 400 Indian reservations.Overall, the violent crime rate in Indian Country is twice the national average and methamphetamine addiction rates are three times higher, according to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.Meanwhile, fewer than 3,000 tribal and federal law enforcement officials patrol more than 56 million acres in Indian Country, less than half of the police presence in comparable non-Indian communities nationwide.
