Alvarado store clerk dies from head wound
BY LANCE MURRAY The travel center store clerk who was shot in the head early Wednesday by a robber has died.Karen Burke died at 11:04 p.m. Thursday at John Peter Smith Hospital, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.Burke was shot while mopping the floor at the Shell Travel Center in Alvarado early Wednesday, police said. The robber followed her through the door to the store after she had gone outside, possibly to empty the mop bucket, and then shot her. Alvarado Police Chief John Allen said that Burke may never have seen the robber walk in, put a gun to her head and pull the trigger."We think he was probably out there in the dark waiting for his chance," Allen said.Burke, 52, had clung to life at JPS while police continued to search for the man who shot her, apparently without saying a word."It was coldblooded," Allen has said. "She may not have even known he was there."Investigators have reviewed surveillance video of the shooting, which occurred about 1:30 a.m. at the travel center on the northbound Interstate 35W service road. After the robber shot Burke, he went for the cash register, Allen said. But the register requires a security code to open it and the robber didn't failed to get it open. He eventually walked out without any cash."He did it all for nothing," Allen said.About five minutes later, a customer found Burke bleeding from the head, Allen said. The customer thought she had fallen, called 911 and reported an injured person.Burke was flown by helicopter ambulance to JPS. En route, paramedics examined the wound, realized it was a gunshot and alerted Alvarado police, Allen said.Schepps Dairy has offered a $10,000 reward in connection with the shooting.Schepps will pay the reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the shooter.
