Students prep for new times - roanoke.com
Roanoke's middle and high school students can sleep in a little while longer this year.One of the items on Shawnell Jackson's back-to-school to-do list was signing up his two young children at the YMCA's Magic Place after-school program. They'll spend about three hours a day there until he gets off work and can pick them up about 5:30 or 6 p.m.

The Vinton woman refused to lose her hope of motherhood.In a perfect world, her radiation oncologist told her in 2003, a young woman stricken twice with breast cancer would have a complete hysterectomy -- to reduce her risk of a cancer recurrence. But Cara Cubitt, 29 at the time and childless, was not swayed by her doctor's perfect world.
