Pakistan's crisis is all about U.S.
"I want to inform the entire nation that on Monday, May 12, all deposed judges will be restored," Nawaz Sharif told journalists in Lahore after a crisis meeting with the head of the other major party in Pakistan's governing coalition, Asif Ali Zardari. But it didn't happen, so on May 13, Sharif pulled all nine ministers of his Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) party out of the government.

Simpler, fairer, updated tax code would benefit government, taxpayers
Stimulus checks in taxpayers' mailboxes this year are a bright note in an otherwise unpleasant season. In most Americans' minds, last month's annual tax-filing ritual raises two questions: Why is it so complicated? And, what's the point of all these incomprehensible rules and exceptions?

Harsh economic realities bringing many consumers back to their senses
The morning after overdoing it, some of us take pleasure in the cleansing process. The carrot juice goes down smoothly, and a simple walk feels virtuous. One vows to exert more self-control and give yoga another try.

Short takes
⢠OHIO UNIVERSITY is known for its excellent journalism and communication programs, and through the generosity of an alumnus, those efforts will continue to innovate and improve. Steven Schoonover, Class of 1967, gave $7.5 million toward a new Schoonover Center for Communication, which will link the former Baker Center student union and the Radio-Television Communications Building. The five schools within the Scripps College of Communication, which are spread across campus, will be joined in the center when it's completed in 2013. The disciplines will be better able to collaborate and adapt to the rapidly changing media world.

Natural gas could solve energy problem
I found a bit of irony in the April 27 Dispatch. The Associated Press article, "Utah drivers revel in cheap natural gas as fuel," has a graphic illustration directly above it from the McClatchy Newspapers article, "Nuclear power taking root," showing that 20 percent of the nation's electricity comes from burning natural gas.

Brunner won award by looking backward
I respond to the Monday Dispatch article "Brunner to get JFK award." Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner got this award for persistence in pursuing a throwback to the 1800s: paper ballots.

Bill would limit citizens' representation
I am writing to express my personal opinion on House Bill 521. I am serving my second term as a Blanchard Township trustee in Hardin County. I have many concerns with this bill, which I will summarize.

Suicide watch
The Department of Veterans Affairs does a disservice to the men and women who put their lives on the line for this country when it obfuscates veterans' suicide rates.

Laws are necessary to limit vicious dogs
As a physician I see many unfortunate injuries to small children. One such incident was a boy of 8 years old who was attacked by a pit bull. His arms and legs were torn down to the bone, and half of his left ear was missing.
