Photo minimizes danger of tracks
The interesting and well-written April 20 Dispatch Life & Arts article "Small-town secrets," a book review of River of Heaven by Lee Martin, was flawed by the 8 1/2 -by-6 1/2 -inch color picture of the author standing right in the middle of a railroad track. Railroad tracks are dangerous places, not at all an appropriate place for a photo opportunity.

Don't publish youths' photos, addresses
As executive director of Franklin County Children Services, I ask TheDispatch to re-evaluate its position on publishing pictures and addresses of juveniles. In the April 27 article "Terror in the park," photographs of youths as young as 13 were printed along with their home addresses and the punishment they received for their part in the attacks in Schiller Park last fall.

Schools chief might be part of problem
I respond to the May 4 Dispatch article, "Newark trying to keep kids in school," on the graduation rate of students attending Newark City Schools. Superintendent Keith Richards' comments were elitist.

Time to rebuild
The resignation of Attorney General Marc Dann allows Ohio to begin repairing the damage from one of the most tragic and distasteful chapters in the history of state government.

Voter-Movers, Deficits and the Blue Dogs
The Nation - The Nation -- At a talk at New America this morning, Grover Norquist hit upon one of my abiding obsessions in politics, the difference between what issues people respond to in polls and what they actually vote on.

The Interior Department vs. The Polar Bears
HuffingtonPost.com - It's good (and also unusual) that the Bush administration has yielded to the scientists and declared the polar bear a threatened species. But it's clear from the press release that the Interior Department has little sympathy for the plight of beleaguered bear populations.

Peter Mehlman's Greatest Travel Fear
High gas prices, over-scheduled airlines, and a dollar dropping in value overseas are causing a lot of folks to worry about where they'll vacation this year. But all that seems benign to our contributor Peter Mehlman. The former Seinfeld writer is worrying about something else much larger.

Fast Forward To Obama's America In 2012
I have tried to imagine that Barack Obama will not be president. My most hopeful moments derive from imagining that as president, Obama will be dissuaded from acting as he now says that he will, National Review Online opines.

Is Obama's Cynicism Enough?
There's clearly some amount of cynicism and ruthlessness that's required of any successful candidate, writes The New Republic. Which makes it worth asking: How much of these qualities does Barack Obama possess - and is it enough?
