Out to stay hot all summer
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Poor Da' Tara. He had just won the biggest race of his career, the Belmont Stakes, but he was merely an afterthought, because all anyone wanted to talk about was not who won, but who lost.As Da' Tara posed for pictures in the Belmont winner's circle on June 7, the media posse left him to chase after Big Brown and his sweat-soaked trainer, Rick Dutrow. It was an understandable reaction, being as Big Brown was going for the Triple Crown, and all Da' Tara had done, up to that point, was win a maiden race. But when Da' Tara runs on Sunday in the Grade 2, $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga, it is he who will be the focal point, what with Big Brown tucked away at Aqueduct, awaiting the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth a week later.

Rising Moon set to bounce back
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. and jockey Cornelio Velasquez were both supremely confident in their chances to win last month's Grade 1 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park. While Dutrow did indeed win the race, it wasn't with the horse Velasquez was riding for him. Dutrow won it with 40-1 shot Frost Giant, while Rising Moon, the horse Dutrow thought would win, finished third.Rising Moon emerged from that race with a lung infection, which explained the lackluster performance. With that cleared up and with two good workouts under Rising Moon's belt, Dutrow and Velasquez are once again feeling good about their chances in Saturday's Grade 1, $750,000 Whitney Handicap at Saratoga.

Thor's Echo primed for a peak performance
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Thor's Echo had every reason to come up short when he finished fourth in the Grade 2 True North Handicap last month at Belmont Park. The champion sprinter of 2006, Thor's Echo had not run in 14 months and was facing Benny the Bull, who has ascended to the top of the sprint division this year.Saturday, Thor's Echo has every reason to come up huge in the Grade 2, $250,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap. With a race under his belt and the likelihood of a fast pace, Thor's Echo could be in the ideal spot to return to the winner's circle for the first time in two years.

Johnny Eves starts second half
DEL MAR, Calif. - Johnny Eves returns from a three-month break in Sunday's $300,000 Bing Crosby Handicap over six furlongs at Del Mar. The Crosby is far from trainer Jay Robbins's goal for Johnny Eves in the second half of the year.Even though Johnny Eves has won a Grade 1 sprint - the Malibu Stakes over seven furlongs at Santa Anita last December - Robbins has the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting on Oct. 25 as a long-term goal.Robbins should not be underestimated in his ability to point for a race with an important horse. In 2001, he brought Tiznow back from a springtime injury for a fall campaign that ended with a victory in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Belmont Park.

Database aims to find injury-prone horses
LEXINGTON, Ky. - A new nationwide database of equine racing injuries eventually could help researchers and veterinarians identify at-risk horses before they break down, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission's equine medical director said Thursday. That is a major goal of The Jockey Club's Equine Injury Database, which officially launched this week after a yearlong pilot program. So far, according to The Jockey Club, about 70 racetracks have signed on to collect racing injury information for the database, which participating track management and regulatory veterinarians can access free of charge.

Distance a challenge for 'Duke'
Duke of Marmalade steps into uncharted waters at Ascot on Saturday when the three-time Group 1 winner tries 1 1/2 miles for the first time in the $1.7 million King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The 4-year-old Duke of Marmalade has established himself as the highest-rated older horse in Europe with victories in the Prix Ganay and the Tattersalls Gold Cup at 1 5/16 miles and the Prince of Wales's Stakes at 1 1/4 miles, but even trainer Aidan O'Brien isn't sure whether the son of Danehill and a Kingmambo mare will stay 12 furlongs. There is reason to debate whether he can get the job done on Saturday. The biggest obstacle in Duke of Marmalade's path is Youmzain. Second in last year's King George as well as the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, both times to Dylan Thomas, he has split a pair of decisions with Duke of Marmalade's stablemate Soldier of Fortune this year, finishing second in the Coronation Cup before winning the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Trained by Michael Channon, Youmzain is the choice to outstay Duke of Marmalade.

Lewis Michael returns in stakes
When Lewis Michael gets beat 25 lengths, something clearly is amiss. And so it was that a decidedly subpar performance in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile last October at Monmouth Park revealed the horse had suffered an injury to his right front ankle."He got a little stoved up on that sloppy strip, got a little ankle on him," trainer Wayne Catalano said. "They fixed him up a little bit, I think, and I got him back at Keeneland in April."
