Missit won the Grade 2 Providencia Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita in April in her first start in the United States, suggesting that she would play a major role in the 3-year-old filly turf division this year. Pinnacle draws crowd, few horses
Pinnacle Race Course, the field of dreams that rose from the swamps and cornfields just south of Detroit Metropolitan Airport, has attracted good crowds through its first four days of racing, including an overflow crowd on opening day that resulted in police turning cars away from the track when the two-lane country roads and the parking lots they lead to were inundated. Detroit-area residents had been without live Thoroughbred racing since 1998, when Detroit Race Course was shuttered. Officials estimated attendance at more than 3,000 on opening day. The next two days were just slightly down from that figure, and the crowd remained respectable at approximately 1,500 on Tuesday when railbirds and fans filled the apron and outdoor bleachers as well as the air-conditioned pavilion.

Tale of Ekati works for Haskell
Tale of Ekati might have run this Sunday in the Grade 2, $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga, but, according to assistant trainer Robin Smullen, "He's a work short." Tale of Ekati will return to action soon, though, for trainer Barclay Tagg. On Wednesday morning at Saratoga, he zipped five furlongs in 1:00.67 on a wet-fast main track, a move that Smullen said will be his next-to-last before the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth on Aug. 3. The work was the fastest of 10 at the distance."That was a pretty good work on this track this morning," Smullen said. "He'll have one more work next week."

Mint Lane works; Jim Dandy possible
Peter Pan winner Mint Lane worked five furlongs in 1:02.77 over the Oklahoma training track Wednesday morning in preparation for a possible start in Sunday's Jim Dandy Stakes.Though the Jim Dandy would be Mint Lane's third race in 45 days, trainer Jimmy Jerkens said that his last two races have taken little out of the colt."He hasn't lost a pound after any of his races, I kind of want to keep him on that schedule," Jerkens said. "Since he's been racing, he hasn't been very willing training-wise, especially galloping; doesn't want to do much in the morning. It's like running him often and not overworking in the morning seems to be working."
