Pyro tunes up for Jim Dandy
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Pyro was the first horse on the Oklahoma track Monday at 5:30 a.m, 20 minutes before Curlin. Like Curlin, he worked a half-mile on a sloppy track with Rosas. Unlike Curlin, he will be running this weekend. After traveling a half-mile in 50.56 seconds, Pyro was confirmed as a starter in the Grade 2, $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes on Sunday."He's a lot sharper since his last race," Blasi said.Pyro was considered one of the elite 3-year-olds in the nation following victories in the Risen Star Stakes and Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds. But he finished 10th of 12 in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, then was eighth of 20 in the Kentucky Derby. In his lone start since then, Pyro won the Northern Dancer Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 14.

Phil the Power will try marathon again
OCEANPORT, N.J. - Heading into the 1 1/2-mile Greenwood Cup last Saturday at Philadelphia Park, trainer Joe Orseno was confident Phil the Power would love a three-turn race and felt he was slightly better on dirt than grass, where he has spent most of his career.Turns out, Orseno was correct on both counts.Phil the Power was no match for Evening Attire, the 8 1/4-length winner, in the Greenwood Cup, a Breeders' Cup Win and Your In race. But Phil the Power, the longest shot in the race at 30-1, was clearly the best of the rest, finishing 2 1/4 lengths in front of third-place finisher Barcola, the 7-5 favorite.

Harty mapping plans for Well Armed
DEL MAR, Calif. - The easy part of the Del Mar meeting ended for Well Armed on Saturday when he led throughout the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap, his second major stakes win of the year. The more difficult part of the season will occur on Aug. 24, when he attempts to stretch his speed over 1 1/4 miles in the $1 million Pacific Classic. The result of that race is likely to determine Well Armed's path for the fall.If Well Armed wins the Pacific Classic, his main objective will be the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic at the Oak Tree meeting on Oct. 25. If he runs poorly, WinStar Farm and trainer Eoin Harty can use the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile on the same day as a fallback race. Well Armed earned an automatic berth in the BC Dirt Mile because the San Diego was a Win and You're In race.
