Michael Whitaker will be riding his Windsor Grand Prix winner, Amai, when he goes last for the British team in today’s Samsung Super League Nations Cup. Derek Rickett, who named the team yesterday on the opening international day of the Royal International Horse Show, has chosen Geoff Luckett to go first (with Britain having been drawn in the opening slot, he will be first in the entire competition). Charlotte Platt, a 22-year-old newcomer to the Super League, will go next for Britain, followed by Duncan Inglis.

Ashton shuns RFU post to follow business interests
Brian Ashton has rejected the Rugby Football Union's offer to become its national academy head coach. Ashton's reign as England coach reached an abrupt end following last season's Six Nations Championship, when they finished second. England's 2003 World Cup-winning captain Martin Johnson has now been installed as manager, working with a coaching team of Brian Smith, John Wells and Mike Ford.

Although he will miss Sunday's Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final against Wakefield due to the foot injury that has kept him out since March, the club have underlined his long-term importance to their pack by offering him the new contract.

Clean pair of heels: Fast Show under the spotlight
Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell might be the two fastest men ever on terra firma but on the choppy Thames yesterday they were treading water somewhat. The pair arrived by speedboat at the Queen Elizabeth Pier, the jetty outside the hedgehog outline of the 02 Arena – the Millennium Dome that was – some 25 minutes behind schedule. At least they made it, though – proudly flying a Jamaican flag.

In the clash of next year's Guineas prospects at Leopardstown last night, the Aidan O'Brien-trained colt Rip Van Winkle ended the unbeaten run of the filly Cuis Ghaire in the Tyros Stakes with a performance that would have delighted anyone clutching an ante-post voucher for the Classic on the Rowley Mile nine months hence. The handsome, powerful bay, previously 25-1 or more in the 2,000 lists, is now as short as 8-1.
