Bodog Releases Betting Odds on Final Nine WSOP Players
Bodog has released betting odds for the final nine World Series of Poker main event players, and with a lack of any real superstar competitor among them, it's no surprise that they directly reflect chip stacks. According to Bodog, the chip leader of the "November Nine" with 26.4...

Swede wins car, WSOPE seat from Betfair Poker
On July 2, Betfair Poker's pros Annette Obrestad, John Tabatabai and Sorel Mizzi helped fill a red Mini Cooper full of poker chips. The car was parked outside the WSOP Europe Lounge, and after more than an hour, it was filled to the brim with poker chips. Once the Mini and its chips were safely secured and the number of chips verifies, visitor to the Rio could try their luck at guessing the amount of chips inside to be able to win the vehicle. "While some people tried to bribe Betfair staff as to the number of chips, others used a more scientific approach, measuring the width of an average chip as well as enquiring about the internal volume of the car," said Betfair Poker in a press release. According to the poker site it was even rumored that Amarillo Slim had hired his own Mini and filled it with chips to try to get the answer. In the end, the best guess went to Sweden-born poker pro Marcus Gustafson. He guessed 127,644, which was within three of the correct amount. Not only did Gustafson win the Mini Cooper, he won a VIP prize package to the 2008 WSOPE as well. The package includes the £10,000 buy-in for the Main Event plus money for travel and accommodations. The WSOPE begins Sept. 19 and includes four events this year. The series will kick off with a £1,500 No-Limit Hold'em event followed by a H.O.R.S.E. event and Pot-Limit Omaha event before the Main Event starts on Sept. 27. Gustafson's prize package isn't the only one that Betfair Poker is giving out either. The poker site is also hosting online satellites for players to win a seat as well. PokerStars welcomes Brazilian to team
Gomes became the first Brazilian to win a World Series of Poker gold bracelet this year when he won the $2,000 No-Limit Hold'em event. The event had more than 2,300 players from around the world, including Kirill Gerasimov from Russia who also made the final table. With the win, Gomes picked up his first major event cash and pocketed $770,540. "Alexandre is a fantastic addition to the world champions of Team PokerStars Pro. Through a mix of card playing skills and competitive spirit, he has exploded on the poker circuit and we believe he will continue to be a player to watch." said Andre Akkari, Team PokerStars Pro. Gomes, 25, was born in Curitiba, Brazil, and was a partner in a corporate law office in his home city until he discovered online poker. Previously he'd just been a social player, playing poker as a hobby with his friends, and then he discovered tournament play on PokerStars. Eventually he was doing well enough with online poker to be able to quit his job as a lawyer and become a full-time professional player. According to PokerStars, Gomes was making regular cash finishes in some of the biggest PokerStars tournaments by early 2007. In February 2008, he made one of his biggest wins on the poker site when he cashed in the Wednesday Hundred Fifty Grand for $65,333. Gomes also started taking on live tournaments in Brazil with some success and had taken on previous WSOP events before finding success this year. "I've always dreamed about playing on Team PokerStars Pro and winning a golden bracelet," Gomes said. "Now, I have realized both dreams at the same time. I don't want to wake up!" Gomes, who plays at PokerStars as Allingomes, joins a stable of pros at the poker sit ethat includes Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer, Joe Hachem, Barry Greenstein, Isabelle Mercier, Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Rousso, Bertrand Grospellier, Humberto Brenes and more. D'Amato talks about online poker scandals
"The Poker Players Alliance is the political and public policy voice for poker players in America. Central to our mission are advocacy efforts in Washington D.C. and around the country to protect poker players from misguided and vague laws and to establish licensed and regulated Internet poker in the U.S.," D'Amato said. He points out that the PPA isn't a regulator body for poker players or the poker industry, but the organization feels compelled to speak out when their mission is potentially undermined by actions which present Internet poker in a negative light. "Trust is paramount in poker. Sadly, this foundation has been undercut by admissions from two well-known online poker companies, Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet, that cheating has occurred on their poker sites," D'Amato said. "The Poker Players Alliance condemns any and all cheating in poker no matter the forum in which it is played. Because of the current legal uncertainties and the lack of federal regulation and oversight, it is especially troubling when cheating occurs in online poker." According to D'Amato, the regulatory situation has resulted in an atmosphere where it's difficult for a proper investigation into the allegations to be conducted. As such, the PPA is urging the online gambling companies involved and their regulating authority, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, to provide a full accounting of the breaches of public trust to help dispel the negative light cast on the industry. The KGC had investigated reports of a security breach on both the UltimateBet and Absolute Poker sites. It was found at both sites that a breach in security had resulted in certain accounts having an unfair advantage at the poker tables. "The recent cheating scandals underscore the need for U.S. licensing and regulation of online poker to help protect consumers. While even the most highly regulated industries are susceptible to fraud and abuse, regulation does provide assurances that when consumers are harmed they have recourse," D'Amato said. "Further, it is abundantly clear that regulation will also address other consumer concerns by successfully providing ways to bar access by children to gambling Web sites and providing the necessary services for problem gamblers." D'Amato continues saying that the federal government cannot continue to abdicate this basic responsibility to the millions of U.S. citizens who choose to play poker online. The ban currently in place is ineffective and also invades on the personal freedoms of law-abiding adults who want to engage in a game of skill. "Remaining consistent with our organization's mission, we will continue our efforts on Capitol Hill to ensure lawmakers are well educated about the benefits of regulation to protect consumers and enable the rights of poker playing adults," D'Amato said. "These scandals will not and should not be the demise of a responsible government approach to Internet poker. Instead, this can be the pathway to understanding that regulation is the key to protecting citizens and the future of America's card game."
