Expectations lowered before election
MONTREAL -- You know a politician is in trouble when he orshe starts lowering expectations weeks before an election is beingheld. Yet that is exactly what Action democratique du Quebec LeaderMario Dumont, the opposition leader, was doing in the lead up totoday's three byelections in the Montreal ridings of Bourget,Pointe-aux-Trembles and the West Quebec riding of Hull. Ininterviews Dumont said the ridings had not been kind to his party.Hull has been a Liberal riding for a long time, slipping onlybriefly to the Parti Quebecois from 1976 to 1981. The Liberalcandidate in this race, Maryse Gaudreault, is the former assistantto the departing Liberal member of legislature Roch Cholette, andwas expected to win. The PQ is running a popular local doctor,Gilles Aube, who has tapped into angst over the state of health carein the region while the ADQ candidate is an unknown, Jean-PhilipRuel.
