UK surgery is a first in Kentucky
For the first time in Kentucky, a pair of lungs has been transplanted to a patient from a donor who suffered cardiac death as opposed to brain death. The unusual surgery is referred to as "non-heart-beating donation" or "donation after cardiac death" and is touted as a way to expand the pool of potential organ donors.Only 12 such operations were performed in the United States last year, said the director of the University of Kentucky Medical Center's lung transplant program, Dr. Timothy Mullett. He performed the transplant with Drs. Mark Bonnell and Hassan Reda. The delicate operation was done from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday, Mullett said, to help Rebecca Boyd, 23, of Pikeville. She has cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that causes the body to create mucus that clogs the lungs."She looks very good. She is responsive. I expect the ventilator will come off tomorrow," said Mullett in an interview Sunday. "She clearly was declining and was very ill during her operation."
