The incredibly busy online poker room hosted six FTOPS events over the span of three days and then announced a new $25,000 World Championship heads-up event. Scheduled to take place on Saturday May 24 the heads-up event will be hosted by none other than the 2008 NBC National Heads-Up poker champion, and Full Tilt pro, Chris Ferguson. Poker fans will get the chance to watch players like Jennifer Harman, Howard Lederer and Phil Ivey battle it out for some gigantic bragging rights. In addition to the pros, online players will be able to buy-in directly for $25,000 or qualify for as little as $500+$35. Visit www.fulltiltpoker.com to learn more about the epic event. Duplicate Poker offers interesting play
Duplicate Poker is based on a concept with its roots in tournament bridge. Players in corresponding seats at different tables are dealt identical poker hands and prove their skill not by how lucky they are but by how well they play each hand in comparison with other players who have the same cards. Normally in poker, a run of "bad cards" can be devastating, but in duplicate poker, a player's opponents are getting the same cards, good or bad. In the end, a run of bad cards that are played well can win just as easily as a run of good cards, according to PKR. How does it work exactly? Instead of playing against the players at the table, poker players at the site are technically playing against their corresponding player at another table. For example, say Player A is in Seat 4 on Table 24, and Player B is in Seat 4 on Table 150. Those players will be dealt the same exact hole cards. Each player has "total chips," which act as a score for the player, and "hand chips," which are refilled for each hand. If Player B plays the hand better than Player A did, resulting in having more hand chips at the end of the hand, Player B will earn chips toward his total chip count. Losing a hand doesn't necessarily mean not earning more total chips either. If Player A and Player B both lose the hand, the one who lost the least amount of hand chips in the hand will earn total chips. Currently the poker site offers the following types of contests using the Duplicate Poker system: Regular and short tournamentsShort tournament sit-and-gosRound Robin tournament sit-and-gosQuick Play Duplicate Poker is operated by a company based in New York City. Alexander the Great: Jung Won a Tidy Sum
The PartyPoker.com Million events are an annual live tourney hosted by Party aboard world class luxury cruise ships. Of the 171 total players who didn't qualify online through the site bought their way into the NL Hold'em Freeze-out event for $8,000. The majority of the entrants for the PPM VI were European, including a whopping 20% from Germany along. As a result it wasn't a shock to see only one non-European make the final table: Final Table Positions and Payouts: Position Player Country Prize 1 Alexander Jung Germany $358,280 2 Dominik Stopka Germany $285,583 3 Cory Albertson USA $159,235 4 Mika Paasonen Finland $119,425 5 Raymond Estall UK $92,883 6 Andreas Jorbeck Sweden $67,675 7 Johannes Strassman Germany $47,770 8 Peter Steinlesberger Austria $31,845 9 Kenneth Gregersen Denmark $21,230 Heads up between the final two was short and one-sided. Jung, after taking down a number of pots uncontested, got it all in with J-7against Stopka's A-9. The flop paired Jung's 7 and it held for the win. "This is my biggest live win so far. The structure of the tournament was perfect for me, and there were some very good players here. I had a lot of respect for Dominik. I had seen him play a great many hands, mostly without a showdown - and when he did have to show it was often something like aces - so he is a good player. However, I felt one or two others were a bit tight on the final table - perhaps wanting to try and climb the money positions." The winner's glass trophy was presented to the University mathematics student by Party Poker's "Ambassador of poker" Mike Sexton along with his first place prize. Look out for Jung at this summer's WSOP in Las Vegas, as he plans to use part of his newly earned bankroll to take a swing at the world's most prestigious poker tournament. ZeeJustin dishes on WSOP, Internet play
PokerListings spoke with Bonomo by phone this week about making the switch from online to live tournaments, the WSOP, and the best young players we'll be seeing this year. Making the transition Bonomo says that the transition to the live game from online has been an easy one. "It's the same game," he says. "I think online is a much better teaching tool in terms of the fundamentals and math, because you see so many more hands per hour. You have a larger sample size and you just learn so much quicker. "There is also the psychological side of playing live, things like tells and not getting nervous. For me, I've been playing competitive Magic since I was 12 or 13, so a lot of my skills carry over from that." But do all successful online players find the shift to live poker, the slower cousin of the online game, as effortless as Bonomo has? "I think any of the most successful online players will find it just as easy, especially cash-game players," he says. "Some tournament players might run into problems just because they're used to playing with shorter stack sizes, and that situation doesn't come up as much live." "Basically, anyone that plays a variety of games online and especially cash games will transfer over really well." Who's next? The last three years have seen the "youngest bracelet winner" mantle change hands annually, with Eric Froehlich, Jeff Madsen, and Bonomo's 2007 WSOP housemate Steve "MrSmokey1" Billirakis all taking their turns at the top. Billirakis' record might not be broken this year, given that he was only 21 years and 11 days old at the time of his win, but Bonomo says he wouldn't be surprised to see a few new players sporting some bling.#img: tom-dwan_19727.jpg: left: Rising stars include Tom "durrrr" Dwan.# "As far as 21-year-olds go, I think Tom "durrrr" Dwan has a really good shot at winning a bracelet. He's a very strong player and he knows more than just Hold'em. "David Benefield has also had some success on the tournament circuit, and he's due for a big win," says Bonomo. Toward the end of the year, Bonomo says, there's one more player everyone should keep their eyes on. "Another guy who was living at our house (at last year's WSOP) who I have to predict a lot of success [for] is Ozzy 87," he says. "He won't actually be 21 until October, though, so he won't be playing at the WSOP." Speaking of the WSOP… "I don't think anyone's strong enough to say they're a favorite to win a bracelet, but I think I'm up there in terms of most likely players to win one," Bonomo says of this year's WSOP. "That's [by] far and away my No. 1 goal." The path to that goal begins with playing 25 events, requiring a high level of dedication. So how does Bonomo plan to maximize his bracelet EV? "One thing for me is that I play terribly if I get no sleep, so that's No. 1 for me, to try to get eight hours a night if possible," he says. "Eating healthy helps me maintain focus. Just trying to be happy - not having major life problems to focus on makes playing poker so much easier." As far as the actual game itself is concerned, Bonomo says the cornerstone of his WSOP efforts will be constant analysis of his plays. "I'm very big on analyzing every single play, both when I'm at the table and when I'm done playing. "I just want to make sure that if I'm making mistakes that I'm learning from every single one of them, and that I won't commit them in the future. That way I'm always learning and improving my game." Bonomo hopes his new status as a Bodog Poker-sponsored pro will lead some of his opponents to making mistakes of their own. "There's always the 'bust a pro' factor," he says. "That's one of the reasons Phil Hellmuth has a lot of success, because people see him on TV and just want to bust him. So I'm hoping I'll get some of that." He says he's already experienced that to some degree at Bodog's Justin Bonomo cash table, where his status works to his advantage. "Whenever I play there, there's always people just going out of their way, throwing money at me and trying to take all my chips." Besides the spending money from overzealous online opponents, there's one other big advantage his new sponsor gives Bonomo this summer. "Team Bodog is superaccommodating to anything I need - whatever I need I just call them," he concludes. "They treat me like a superstar. I love the experience of being on the team so far."Visit PokerListings.com

Jack Hinchey wins World Poker Crown
The World Poker Crown began play online at Pacific Poker where a $3 million prize pool was up for grabs. When play got down to the top ten, the game was stopped and the players and their chips were shipped to Spain to play out the remainder of the game live. Jack Hinchey was one of four Canadians who made it to the live table at the Peralada Castle in Barcelona. Unfortunately one of his countrymen, Michael Leah was an early casualty before broadcast of the final table began. Along with Leah, Pini Roberto went out early and the webcast began broadcasting when play was down to the final eight. They were: Mark Castonguay, CanadaJack Hinchey, CanadaMichael Lawson, CanadaMark Roessler, GermanyPiotr Stanislaw, PolandArjan van Bavel, NetherlandsBert van Doesburg, NetherlandsBart Wetsteijn, Netherlands Once the cameras were rolling, Castonguay went out in eighth place. It took about eight hours of play for the final table to finally be decided after that. In the end it came down to Canadian versus Canadian as Hinchey and Michael Lawson went head to head. Hinchey started the match-up with $908,000 in chips to Lawson's $200,000. Lawson made a game of it early to double-up, but he never could quite catch his fellow Canuck. On the final hand Lawson was holding #Td#Ts and bet $72,000. Hinchey made the call with #Kc#Qs, and they saw a flop of #Kh#Jh#6h. Lawson moved all-in, and Hinchey made the call. The players revealed their hands and then watched as the board finished out with a #Js and a #Ks to give Hinchey a full house and the victory. The results were:Place Name Prize 1st Jack Hinchey $1 million 2nd Michael Lawson $397,000 3rd Piotr Stanislaw $210,000 4th Arjan van Bavel $180,000 5th Bart Wetsteijn $120,000 6th Bert van Doesburg $90,000 7th Mark Roessler $60,000 8th Mark Castonguay $30,000 Hinchey, who manages a pump and electric motor service, said after the win, "This is a lot better than being in a sewage pit." Ladies WSOP Academy returns in June
The two-day Ladies Only WSOP Academy event is scheduled for June 6-7 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. It offers players a chance to hone their skills under the tutelage of Annie Duke before the start of the 2008 World Series of Poker $1,000 Ladies No-Limit Hold'em Championship. Joining Duke as instructors of the camp are Alex Outhred, poker tells expert Joe Navarro and many others. According to the WSOP Academy, its world-class instructors will elevate participants' games to the next level with in-depth seminars, live hand demonstrations, interactive workshops and customized handbooks, all focusing on aspects of No-Limit Texas Hold'em strategy. "More women are playing poker, and winning, than ever before, and our goal is to help even more women master the game by giving them the confidence and skills they need to be a threat at the table," said Brandon Rosen of Post Oak Productions, the company that produces the WSOP Academy. "The fact that we had a novice poker player go straight from our academy to become a World Champion two days later is a testament to the level of instruction Annie Duke and all of our instructors offer our participants. We're expecting to see more WSOP Academy grads go on to win bracelets in 2008." This is the second year the WSOP Academy is offering the Ladies Only Event at the World Series of Poker. In its inaugural year the camp sold out, and one of its graduates went on to win the 2007 WSOP Ladies event. Sally Anne Boyer outlasted the largest field ever assembled for a ladies poker tournament, 1,286, to become the women's champion. She'd only been playing poker for a year and won the tournament immediately after attending the WSOP Academy. "The WSOP Academy gave me the confidence I needed at the table and taught me key concepts that I was able to put into action right away in the tournament, like pot odds, table demeanor and what to look for when reading someone," said Boyer after her record-setting win, which netted her $262,077 in cash. "The Academy is the quickest way to your WSOP bracelet." One difference this year will be a poker tells seminar presented by noted author and lecturer Joe Navarro. He has designed a new seminar focusing on female-specific non-verbal behavior. Along with the poker instruction, the WSOP Academy Ladies Only event will offer a total-immersion poker experience that give players access to some of the biggest names in the game and a chance to compete in a private tournament to win their way into WSOP events. The top four finishers in the private tournament will each win a $1,500 entry into the 2008 WSOP event of their choice. The cost of the WSOP Academy Ladies Only Event is $1,699. Space is limited to 100 participants, and the event is expected sell out well in advance. Additional details for this event and all other Academy events are available at WSOPAcademy.com or by calling 1-800-989-WSOP.Visit PokerListings.com
