EDMONTON -- Police arrested 11 Greenpeace activists who weretaking part in a protest against the oilsands near a toxic wastepond in northern Alberta on Thursday. Protesters had unfurled amassive banner near the tailings pond on Syncrude's Aurora operationnorth of Fort McMurray. RCMP said 11 protesters had been arrestedfor trespassing and handed $287 tickets. The Syncrude site was thecause of international controversy this year when 500 waterfowl diedafter landing on a tailings pond, which holds the remaining clay,water, sand, hydrocarbons and heavy metals that are the result ofthe extraction process.
