Billiards Semifinals Set for GenerationPool.com Championships
Billiards Semifinals Set for GenerationPool.com Championshipsby InsidePOOL StaffOnly four players remain in each division of the GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships, with the semifinals set for Wednesday afternoon and evening. All semifinal and final matches will be taped for later broadcasts by ESPN.In the first semifinal of the day, Johnny Archer will meet up with Ronnie Wiseman. Archer, having bested Tony Crosby 11-5, matched up with Gabe Owen in the final round Tuesday evening. The two players went neck and neck through the entire match until it came to rest at double-hill. It was Owen’s break, but he missed a 1-7 carom attempt. Archer fired in the 1 ball and played four-rail position to get shape on the 2. From there he had few problems clearing the table of the remaining balls to advance. Wiseman reached the semifinals by first sending Charlie Bryant to the one-loss side 11-4 and then eliminating Steve Moore from the tournament 11-6.Anna Kostanian and Xiaoting Pan will play in the second semifinal match. In Tuesday’s evening rounds, Kostanian met Allison Fisher, ranked number one by the WPBA. Kostanian was able to capitalize on Fisher’s uncharacteristic errors and won their match 9-6. In the same round, Pan toppled Karen Corr, ranked third on the women’s tour, in another neck-and-neck match that saw Pan score a 9-7 victory. To start the evening session, Shawn Putnam and Jeremy Jones will play the third semifinal match. Putnam notched a hill-hill win over Steve Moore earlier in the day and then matched up with former world champ Mika Immonen. Yet another tough match ensued, and just when Immonen took the lead at 9-8, he left an open table in the next rack for Putnam to tie it up. A break and run-out earned Putnam the hill, and then in the last rack, Immonen overcut the 9 ball, handing Putnam the match 11-9.Jones’ first match of the day was against Gabe Owen, whom he defeated 11-6 to face Raj Hundal, who had just vanquished Thorsten Hohmann 11-8 in the battle between two “Hitmen.” But Hundal faltered in this match—from a 5-1 lead, he allowed Jones back in the match. Soon it was 9-all, and though Jones missed a bank attempt on the 8 ball, Hundal missed a straight shot. Now on the hill, Jones took advantage of a foul by Hundal to finish off the match 11-9. Watch more videos (http://www.youtube.com/InsidePOOLmag)The last semifinal match will feature former BCA Open champion Jasmin Ouschan versus Ga Young Kim. Ouschan, who hails from Austria, played fellow countrywoman Gerda Hofstatter in the evening round and dominated her. Ouschan held a 5-0 lead before Hofstatter put a game under her belt. Hofstatter fought back to draw within a rack of her opponent at 6-5, but that was all she could do. Hofstatter missed the 6 ball up the rail in the last rack, and Ouschan cleared to win 9-5.Kim’s Tuesday evening match-up was against Kelly Fisher, and in one of the speediest matches of the round, the ladies kept the score close until Kim was up 8-7. She missed a simple 4 ball, at which point Fisher played safe on the 5. Kim kicked and contacted the 5 but left an open table for Fisher. However, Fisher scratched on the 9 ball, handing Kim a 9-7 victory.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.

Mike Dechaine bested Alex Lely 10-8, while Robb Saez won 10-6 over Germany’s Thomas Engert, and Adam “GQ” Smith scored a 10-7 victory over Louis Ulrich. While Sarah Rousey and Yu Ram Cha both lost their matches against Go Takami 10-5 and Richard Wolff 10-3, respectively, Gerda Hofstatter of Austria came out ahead of Chris Bartram 10-8 in their match.Ernesto Dominguez has won two matches so far, one against Yukiko Hamanisho 10-4 and the other over Allen Hopkins 10-6, the younger Dominguez, Oscar, was defeated 10-6 in an early afternoon match.Marcus Chamat of Sweden bested Dave Hemmah 10-7, Tony “Tornado” Drago won 10-8 over Luc Salvas, young gun John Morra dealt Diego Pedro Simon a 10-4 loss, Edwin Montal scored a 10-6 win over Mike Davis, and Mika Immonen sent Corey Deuel to the one-loss side 10-4.The Billiard Education Foundation’s “Challenge the Stars” event brought in pool fans this evening to play against their favorite pros. This BEF event is one of the most anticipated, as champions such as Johnny Archer, Ralf Souquet, Niels Feijen, Tony Robles, Thorsten Hohmann, Mike Davis, Mika Immonen, and Rodney Morris gave of their time to mingle and play pool with some of their biggest fans, all the while raising money for an excellent cause. There was also a raffle and an auction to benefit the BEF, and Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman made a special appearance, thrilling the crowd with his trick shot exhibition. For live coverage of the 8th Annual Predator 10-Ball Championship, please visit predator10ball.com, Kozoom.com, and InsidePOOLmag.com.

Damas World 8-Ball Championship into Day Two
Damas World 8-Ball Championship into Day Two Fujairah UAE Hosts World Class Billiards Eventby WPA StaffAfter two days of play in Fujairah, the Damas World 8-Ball Championship has completed round one and begun round two. Already two billiard players, former champion Ronnie Alcano of the Philippines and Jianbu Fu of China, have already booked their spots in the final rounds. Many others are less fortunate and still have a bit of road to travel. One has even already begun his plans for travel home. That unfortunate player, Carlos Talavera of Guatemala, fell first to Alcano 8-1 and then to Hanni Al Howry of the UAE 8-3.All of the tension of this event is now focused on the one-loss side of the brackets. Those on this side of the board are faced with sudden death in every remaining match they play. Another loss sends them home. This list includes current world 9-ball champion Daryl Peach, who lost his first-round match when he won the 9-ball title in Manila and now must strive to equal that feat by winning all of his remaining matches to claim the crown. Also hanging on by a single thread is Ronnie Wiseman of the USA, Francis Crevier of Canada, Chris Melling of Great Britain, former world champion Ralf Souquet of Germany (who lost to Jeff De Luna of the Philippines 8-6), Mosconi Cup team member Konstantin Stepanov of Russia, Hanni Al Howry of the UAE, Bruno Muratori of Italy, and Darren Appleton of Great Britain, who must now face Jovan Bustamante of the Philippines in one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament thus far.More comfortably ensconced on the winners’ side with both barrels still loaded are many names expected to be there. We have already mentioned Alcano and Fu, the only two winners to have already completed two matches without a stain. Also still in the comfort zone are Gabriele Cimmino of Italy, Marcus Westin of Germany, Siu Wai Au of Hong Kong, Elvis Calasang of the Philippines, Naoyuki Oi of Japan (who is the player that sent Peach to the one-loss side), Bahram Lufty of Denmark, Rusian Chinahov of Russia, and Antonio Gabica of the Philippines. They are joined by the only female competitor in this event, Jasmin Ouschan of Austria, who defeated Saleem Al Junabi of the UAE 8-5 to progress. Other players of note without a loss are former world champion Oliver Ortmann, who played brilliantly in his 8-0 drubbing of New Zealander Matt Edwards; Radislaw Babica of Poland; Marcus Chamat of Sweden; Corey Deuel of the USA (who destroyed Appleton of Great Britain 8-4); WPA world number-one-ranked Dennis Orcollo of the Philippines; former world champion Chia-Ching Wu of Taipei; Niels Feijen of the Netherlands; Satoshi Kawabata of Japan; and Roberto Gomez of the Philippines. Gomez was the runner-up to Peach in the World 9-Ball Championship this past year and now must face Shane Van Boening of the USA in what should be a great match to determine who must travel over to the left side of the brackets. Allison Fisher Scores in San Diego
Allison Fisher Scores in San Diego WPBA San Diego Classic / Alpine, CAby InsidePOOL StaffAllison “The Duchess of Doom” Fisher has triumphed at the Women's Professional Billiards Association (WPBA) San Diego Classic, winning 7-4 over Austria’s Gerda Hofstatter in the finals to cap off a four-day run of excellent play. This event was hosted by the Viejas Casino in Alpine, CA, and began Thursday, April 9. Having come through undefeated to the semis by virtue of wins over daunting opponents such as Jennifer Barretta, Vivian Villareal, and Helena Thornfeldt, Fisher was primed for her semifinal match against Karen “The Irish Invader” Corr. In the shortened race to 7, Corr was the one to take an early two-rack lead, which she kept until the fifth game when she missed a 4-9 combo. Gaining momentum with every ball she sank, Fisher climbed back until the score stood at 4 apiece. She then took the next two games as well to reach the hill. Fisher, however, missed a key 5-9 combo in the next rack for the win, and Corr fought back to make it a double-hill nail-biter. The last rack was a real killer: Fisher broke and ran out to the 5 ball but locked her cue ball up on the 6. She tried to play safe, and Corr reversed it on her, playing the 6 and the cue to opposite end rails. Fisher went for the uncompromising shot and attempted the long bank but missed; however, Corr was unable to capitalize, missing a straightforward shot on the 8 ball in order to get position on the 9 ball, and Fisher finished the match off with a 7-6 win.In the second semifinal match, Hofstatter and former Player of the Year Ga Young Kim matched up for the right to meet Fisher in the finals. Kim took command from early on, but her aggressive play caused some unexpected errors that Hofstatter benefited from to make the score 6-4 Kim. Two more key missed by Kim brought the score to hill-hill with Kim breaking in the final rack. She made the 1 ball on her last break but opted to play a bank on the 3 ball, having missed position off the 2. Kim missed, and Hofstatter calmly picked her way through the final six balls for a 7-6 victory.Having made their way to the ESPN-televised final match, Fisher and Hofstatter squared off to fight for first place. It was a great match, but in the end, Fisher walked away the 7-4 winner, taking home yet another first-place trophy to add to her collection.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
