Airman under fire; Pararescueman saves two girls
The day started out as normal as they do in a combat area of Afghanistan, said Tech. Sgt. Clinton Beck, a pararescueman with the 24th Special Tactics Squadron. He awoke with his team of elite special operators and began planning the day's mission, he said. As the team approached their target, they came under enemy fire. They could see that there were several Afghan women and children caught in the dangerous crossfire. After consulting his team leader, Sergeant Beck sprinted across the battlefield to aid a 14-year-old girl shot in the femur. He moved the girl to safety, treated her severe bleeding, and splinted her leg. more...

Baldwin County infant diagnosed with EEE
An infant has contracted Eastern equine encephalitis in Baldwin County, according to public health officials, but they are releasing few details. It is the first human case of the mosquito-borne disease in the state this year, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health. In September, 6-month-old Dylan Chaparro of Gulf Shores died in a Mobile hospital from Triple E, becoming at that time Alabama's first victim of the disease in two years, according to media reports. Baldwin County Health Department Environmentalist Rachel Beck said the baby is less than a year old and is still hospitalized, but she wasn't sure about the child's condition. She said she couldn't reveal the community where the infection occurred. "We have detected EEE pretty much countywide ... concentrating too much on one area is a disservice," she said. Beck said the diagnosis of Triple E was confirmed last week and infection apparently occurred when the baby was outside. A visit to the home revealed that screens were in place, she said. Triple E was detected last month in two sentinel chickens in the Orange Beach area and one sentinel chicken in the Gulf Shores area, health officials said. "With summer in full swing and many people enjoying outdoor activities, it is imperative that residents take every effort to reduce their exposure to mosquitoes," Beck said in a written statement. Triple E, West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne viruses are transmitted from bird to mosquito to bird and sometimes the insects will take blood from humans and horses, transmitting the disease to them. A vaccine is available for horses but not humans, health officials said. Associate State Public Health Veterinarian Dr. Dee Jones said he wasn't familiar with the details of the infant case, but said Triple E is more dangerous to humans than the West Nile virus. "Both are dangerous, but it seems like a higher percentage of EEE patients will die," he said. The EEE virus kills about 30 percent of those infected and leaves another 30 percent with permanent brain damage, according to previous reports. Jones said he didn't know what part of Baldwin County the infection occurred, but all county residents should consider themselves at risk. "From a southern Alabama standpoint, it typically doesn't matter if it happened on Third or Fourth Street in a city. We have it circulating between birds and mosquitoes, and it's not any more likely to happen in the same neighborhood as three miles away," he said. "It's out there."
