Two Mohawk Trail Regional High School students expelled for bringing guns to school
An explusion hearing for a third student has been postponed due to special circumstances.By GEORGE GRAHAM ggraham@repub.com BUCKLAND - Two Mohawk Trail Regional High School students who brought firearms into the school this spring have been expelled, Superintendent Michael A. Buoniconti said. An expulsion hearing for a third student involved in one of the two separate incidents has been postponed due to what Buoniconti described as special circumstances that require additional due process. That particulate student had been involved in a May 27 incident at the school. It came to light after state police received a tip that one of the students brought a gun to school that day and then gave it to another who brought it home. State police confiscated the weapon in Ashfield and notified school officials of the incident the next day. The second student in that incident appealed his expulsion yesterday, Buoniconti said, adding he has yet to act on that appeal. School officials learned of another incident, in which a student brought a firearm to school prior to May 27, after Principal Brian Beck met with the student body to stress the importance of keeping open communications between students and staff. Several students then met with Beck to describe that prior incident, Buoniconti said. That student was subject to an expulsion hearing and then expelled, Buoniconti said. That student has not appealed the expulsion although the 10-day appeal period is still open, he said. Buoniconti declined to elaborate on the two incidents or name any of the students involved. Federal statutes pertaining to weapons cases require a minimum expulsion of one year and state statutes allow permanent expulsion, Buoniconti said. The principal wields the authority to expel, and the superintendent would preside over any appeal.

Sergeant Sues LAPD For Religious Discrimination
A sergeant disciplined for anti-gay remarks during off-duty hours as a pastor has sued the Los Angeles Police Department alleging religious discrimination. Sgt. Eric Holyfield, dressed in black clergy attire, told mourners during a 2006 eulogy for a fellow officer that homosexual acts were "sinful" and an "abomination" and would lead to condemnation in hell. LAPD Deputy Chief Charlie Beck, who was among the mourners, filed a formal complaint against Holyfield after the funeral.

Hayden Proves 'Worthy' of Rediscovery
Hayden's "Worthy of Your Esteem" demonstrates why the singer-songwriter was never meant to be a Beck-level star. The arrangement is pure bedroom-tapes quality, and he still sings in an unassuming, plaintive voice that approaches a mumble. Still, the song is a nuanced beauty.
