St. Andrews Coffee House celebrates a decade in business
ST. ANDREWSNot much has changed inside St. Andrews Coffee House since it opened in May 1998.Its walls still are lined with early 20th century black-and-white photos depicting life in historic St. Andrews and a World War II-era portrait of Clark Gable taken when the famed actor attended gunnery school at Tyndall Air Force Base (then Tyndall Field). "We're very old-fashioned. We're not a Wi-Fi place," said co-owner Ellen Mapelsden. "We want people to have a conversation and read."The Beck Avenue coffeehouse has attracted a loyal group of regulars over the last decade. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Mapelsden and co-owner Robbie Fehrenbach are hosting an open house at the coffeehouse tonight from 6 to 8 p.m.Both talked Wednesday afternoon about the coffeehouse's early days and how St. Andrews changed since they opened their doors.Mapelsden said she grew up in the neighborhood and described the Beck Avenue business district as "pretty depressed" when the coffeehouse opened. When she and Fehrenbach decided to open the business, the two went to other cities and toured multiple coffeehouses to get ideas for their new location, Mapelsden said.Fehrenbach quit her job with Bay County's risk management department when the coffeehouse opened, but Mapelsden said she kept working for a few years at Life Management Center."When it was slow at first, it was very scary. But I think our plan was long-term," Fehrenbach said. The coffeehouse's Beck Avenue building was built in 1927 and has housed businesses ranging from Gainer Brothers Grocery to Brown's Pharmacy.Since the coffeehouse's opening, St. Andrews and Beck Avenue have gone through a steady revitalization period, with the eight-story Harbour Village condominium opening in 2006 and plans for the Shrimpboat Restaurant to open this summer.Mapelsden said the condo's arrival, and its influx of neighbors, made the area feel like a walking neighborhood again. The coffeehouse has made some changes, adding daily lunch specials and more breakfast and lunch items to its menu."If we were just a coffeehouse, we'd be out of business," Mapelsden said, emphasizing that coffee was a luxury right now, because of the economy. The co-owners sent out more than 100 e-mail notices to coffeehouse regulars about tonight's open house, Mapelsden said. She said she and Fehrenbach planned to be on Beck Avenue for a long time."We're a small business. We are lucky to be able to do this," she said. Business name: St. Andrews Coffee HouseLocation: 1006 Beck Ave.Event: Open house tonight from 6 to 8 p.m.
