Schools vie for new teachers at Arlington job fair
By EVA-MARIE AYALA ARLINGTON -- On Friday, Cassie Landa graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma.By Monday morning, she was among hundreds of would-be teachers at the Arlington Convention Center for a job fair with nearly 60 North Texas school districts, including Arlington and Fort Worth. Some newly hired teachers picked up thousands of dollars in bonus money."This is the biggest one around, and I've probably already interviewed with 15 or 20 districts," Landa said just before noon.High-need jobsMath, science and bilingual teachers were the most sought-after applicants. With high school students now required to take four years of math and science, the increased demand has fueled a bidding war for teachers. Many districts at the fair offered bonuses for those fields. Among the most aggressive were Cedar Hill and Dallas. Cedar Hill, which has a base starting salary of $44,500, offered $7,500 stipends for math and science teachers with master's degrees and $5,000 for those with bachelor's degrees.Dallas, whose starting salary is $43,500, offered $4,000 stipends on top of $1,500 signing bonuses for math, science and bilingual teachers. The district also offered an additional $6,000 to teachers who go to certain struggling schools in the district."These are the teachers everyone needs," Dallas recruiter Tyrrell Taplin said. "I need 122 teachers for bilingual alone."Long linesSome of the most sought-after districts, including Denton and Coppell, had lines wrapping around the aisles.Coppell was the only district with an entire row to itself; it had about 25 administrators talking to applicants. The district needs about 20 teachers for next school year and had two job offers accepted by midday.Fun stuffWhile applicants talked with school officials, they had a chance to pick up some cool swag, too. Many districts gave out pens and calculators. But some of the more interesting giveaways included blinking red hearts reading "Got heart?" from Little Elm, a small plastic massager from Dallas and a tiger-shaped stress reliever doll from Corsicana."We're not always the first district a lot of folks think of in the north Dallas area," said Keith Moore, Corsicana High School principal. "It's just something people can take home and look at later. Then when they do, they might think, 'Oh. Let me check out their site.' Whatever it takes for them to remember us."
