Man pleads guilty in teen's fatal shooting
By MELODY McDONALD Two weeks after a jury couldn't agree whether he did it, a 20-year-old man has pleaded guilty to killing a teenager during a confrontation over a minor car crash.Giorgio Raleigh Debose, 20, reached a plea bargain Friday and received a six-year prison sentence for murder in the death of Terrance Chance. In June, Debose went on trial in state District Judge George Gallagher's court, but a mistrial was declared after the jury deadlocked 7-5 on a guilty verdict."I think, based on the way the trial turned out and the way our evidence came across when the witnesses got on the stand, we felt the appropriate step was to resolve this in a just manner," prosecutor Jim Hudson said. "I would have, obviously, liked more time, but we felt like this was the right thing to do."Debose's attorney, Jim Shaw, said it was a fair deal."I hated for him to come in and plead guilty, but they made him an offer of six years and he has almost two years in there [in jail], and he took it," Shaw said. "They made him an offer that he wouldn't refuse. I hated for him to come in and plead guilty and, in a sense, throw cold water on the people that believed he was not guilty."Police have said that on July 5, 2006, Chance and another man were in a Chevrolet Malibu when it struck a Chrysler New Yorker occupied by Debose and other men. Witnesses told police that two people who were in the New Yorker chased the Malibu on foot but that the car got away. The cars eventually met up again at East Mulkey Street and New York Avenue. Witnesses said Debose and another man got out of the New Yorker and confronted the Malibu's driver and Chance, a passenger. Witnesses told police that Debose shot Chance. Afterward, police have said, Chance's friends loaded his body into the back seat of the Malibu and drove it to an abandoned house on East Powell Avenue. The driver later told police that he left Chance's body there while he tried to retaliate for the killing.

Detroit 3 losing buyers to rivals
Barely more than two out of every five new cars and trucks bought by Americans from April to June - 41.2 percent, to be exact - were made and sold by Detroit's automakers. That's according to the latest retail market share estimates provided exclusively to the Free Press by the Power Information Network, a subsidiary of J.D. Power and Associates.Just two years ago, almost half - 49.8 percent - of the cars and trucks purchased by American consumers in dealer showrooms were made by Detroit's automakers. The decline that has followed, of nearly 9 percentage points, largely reflects the massive consumer shift from big pickups and SUVs to fuel-efficient cars in the wake of a sour U.S. economy and gas prices over $4 a gallon.Industry observers say Detroit's automakers must do more, and faster, to build up their stable of cars and combat the steep declines."It's startling. It's major," Tom Libby, senior director of industry analysis at the Power Information Network, told the Free Press in an interview Monday. "They have to deal with this, and in the short term, we're not going to see a lot because you can't turn it around overnight."While General Motors Corp. is still the best-performing automaker in America's showrooms, capturing 19.7 percent of all car and truck sales, Toyota Motor Corp. is in second place and nipping at GM's heels with 19.1 percent of the market.Meanwhile, Honda Motor Co. has squarely bypassed Ford Motor Co. as the No. 3 automaker in America when it comes to retail sales.Honda, which is best-known for fuel-efficient cars such as the Civic and is the fastest-growing automaker in America, now has 14.1% of the U.S. retail market.Ford, which is best-known for its trucks, such as its iconic F-150, has now sunk to 12.3 percent of the market. At the same time, Chrysler LLC remains in fifth place, just ahead of Nissan.Libby said Honda's commitment to sensible, affordable, high-quality vehicles has helped it rise to the top of consumers' minds when they are shopping for value."We believe right now that Honda is the best-positioned company," Libby said.Marc Cannon, a spokesman at AutoNation, the country's largest chain of new vehicle dealerships, with 23 Honda stores, said the brand is performing so well because "they've always stuck to their core values. I think Honda has always been true to their brand."Retail sales are those made directly to consumers in dealer showrooms, and they exclude fleet sales to rental car companies, businesses and governments, which are typically sold at a discount. Industry experts view retail sales as one of the best measures of demand and future financial performance because they are generally more profitable.Automakers release their overall sales results, which combine retail and fleet performance, so the Power Information Network provides its own estimate of retail performance based on transaction data from more than 7,000 dealership franchises. In all, Detroit's automakers lost 4.5 percentage points of retail market share in the United States during the April to June period. That is the largest year-to-year decline since the third quarter of 2006.Every percentage point of annual retail market share is about the equivalent of half of one assembly plant's full production for the year. That means Detroit's automakers would have two to three more assembly plants than they need if the losses are sustained all year.Comparing the first half of this year with the same period a year ago, Detroit's automakers lost 3.4 percentage points of retail market share, because of a stronger performance in the first quarter.Among Detroit's automakers, GM is the best performer through the first half of the year. The Detroit-based automaker, which had been stabilizing its share, has lost about half a percentage point of market share. At the same time, Ford has lost just over a percentage point of share, and Chrysler has lost almost two full percentage points of share.Meanwhile, most of Detroit's major rivals, including Toyota, have managed to keep their share of the market flat or increasing during these tough times.Honda has been standing head and shoulders above the pack in this year's tough market, picking up about 2 percentage points of market share so far this year.Joe Serra, president of Serra Automotive based in Grand Blanc, which owns 33 automotive franchises, including three Honda stores, said the Japanese auto brand has been helped by its strategic decision to not move into traditional truck territory. All of Honda's cars, he noted, are popular right now. Through June, total sales -- Honda makes few fleet sales - are up 67 percent for the Honda Fit subcompact car, which gets 30 miles per gallon or better in city-highway driving. They were also up 19 percent for the Civic compact car and 14 percent for the Accord midsize car, both of which offer optional hybrid powertrains."The problem with Honda right now is just finding enough of them," Serra said.He has the opposite problem with its four showrooms that sell Hummer models, such as the H3, which gets about 15 m.p.g. in combined city-highway driving."It's just not performing right now," Serra said.Contact SARAH A.
