Scientists expose mystery behind northern lights
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) -- Scientists have exposed some of the mystery behind the northern lights. On Thursday, NASA released findings that indicate magnetic explosions about one-third of the way to the moon cause the northern lights, or aurora borealis, to burst in spectacular shapes and colors, and dance across the sky.The findings should help scientists better understand the more powerful but less common geomagnetic storms that can knock out satellites, harm astronauts in orbit and disrupt power and communications on Earth, scientists said.read more

Lightning Sparks Home
We've been seeing a lot of thunderstorms in the East lately and with thunderstorms of course comes a lot of lightning. In fact Greenville Fire-Rescue says lightning struck a house and sparked a big blaze. Witnesses say an early morning fire alarm at Unity Free Will Baptist Church brought Greenville Fire-Rescue crews here. Reporter: "Greenville Fire-Rescue says it was a false alarm and they cleared the scene. But one of the firefighters kept smelling smoke and followed it down Scarborough Road." Neighbor Theresa Holley says, "We're fortunate someone had a good nose!" That good nose led crews to Cumberland Place. Neighbors say it was engulfed in flames but they're grateful it wasn't worse. Greenville Fire-Rescue says lightning started the blaze. It's a phenomenon no one can control but experts say there are a few things to keep in mind. Lt. Matt McMahon says, "A good sign of a close lightning strike is when you see the flash that you heard the bang at the same time that's a close lightning strike." If you have the slightest suspicion lightning has hit your home or anything nearby McMahon says let the fire department know quickly. McMahon says, "Those type of fires start out very small and smolder for a long period of time." McMahon says stay away from water and stay inside. But when you're inside you're surrounded by electronics which are often vulnerable to lightning strikes. So how do you keep your stuff safe? Todd Rouse of Greenville Utilities Commission says surge protectors are common these days but he warns: shop for them carefully. Rouse says, "If you really want surge protection you need to be watching what labels say to see if it is a surge protector or just does it give 5 connections out of 1 check back out." Rouse says if you don't have surge protectors, unplug electronics immediately, you don't want to risk them or anything else getting struck. Rouse says you also can purchase an interruptible power supply from electronic stores or online they have battery back up and you can hook multiple electronics to it including your phone and computer.
