Icelandic krona soars as Nordic central banks step up
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Iceland's beleaguered currency soared more than 4% against the euro and the U.S. dollar Friday after Nordic central banks agreed to provide a swap facility that would allow Iceland's central bank to acquire up to 1.5 billion euros ($2.322 billion) against the krona if needed. The agreements with the central banks of Norway, Denmark and Sweden "significantly enhance the available international liquidity of the Central Bank of Iceland," the bank said in a news release. "The bank intends to further bolster its liquidity in the period ahead." The krona surged to 115.16 per euro, a gain of 4.3%, and remained 4.8% higher against the dollar at 74.150. The krona remains down 24% against the euro since the beginning of the year.Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move.
