U.S. stocks slightly off lows service-sector data
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks slightly came off earlier lows following the release of better-than-expected data on the service sector of the economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 88 points, or 0.8%, at 11,444, compared with 11,425 in early trade. The S&P 500 index was down 8 points, or 0.6%, at 1,266, off an earlier low of 1,267. The Nasdaq Composite was down 18 points, or 0.8%, at 2,315, after earlier falling to 2,314. Economic activity in the nonmanufacturing sectors of the U.S. economy expanded slightly in August, the Institute for Supply Management reported Thursday. The ISM nonmanufacturing index rose to 50.6% in August from 49.5% in July.
