(Nasdaq: AMLN) and Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) in a conference call today provided context and additional information regarding the August 18, 2008 U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) update to a prior alert for BYETTA(R) (exenatide) injection referencing pancreatitis. The companies were aware of the pancreatitis cases referenced in the alert, as well as others, and previously reported these cases to the FDA.

The Amex Pharmaceutical Index rose 0.7% to 312.7 and the Amex Biotechnology Index [s:$btk] advanced 0.3% to 825.8. Shares of Amylin were up 5% at $21.42. The stock tumbled almost 25% on Wednesday after the biotech group reported that four more users of its drug Byetta have died. BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Shares of biotech group Amylin Pharmaceuticals tumbled in pre-market trading Wednesday, the day after it announced that four more deaths have been reported amongst users of its diabetes drug Byetta. The news comes on the heels of last week's revelation that two users of Byetta had died from complications of pancreatitis, a severe inflammation of the pancreas. Byetta, which is used to treat type 2 diabetes, already carries a warning on its label that has been associated with pancreatitis in some users. Amylin noted that diabetics in general also run a notably higher risk of developing pancreatitis than the general population.
