Dow Chemical posts lower profit, higher sales
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Dow Chemical Co. reported second-quarter net income of $762 million, or 81 cents a share, down from $1.04 billion, or $1.07 a share, earned in the same period during 2007. Quarterly sales generated by the Midland, Mich.-based chemicals giant rose to $16.38 billion from the prior year's $13.27 billion, with 5% volume growth -- the company's best since 2004 -- paced by Europe and other areas outside North America. Based on estimates compiled by FactSet Research, analysts had been looking for earnings of 85 cents a share, on average, in the latest quarter. The company incurred another $1 billion in costs compared to the first quarter but compensated for this with fast implementation of price increases. Double-digit sales growth was seen across Dow's five main businesses -- performance plastics, basic plastics, performance chemicals, basic chemicals and agricultural sciences. Chairman and CEO Andrew Liveris cited "new uncertainties in demand around the world. We believe the U.S. economy will continue to weaken for the rest of 2008, and that the outlook for the global economy will remain uncertain. Despite this, our results have demonstrated that our strategy for diversification on a global and end-use market basis has allowed us to manage through these challenging times." Dow recently announced an agreement to acquire Rohm & Haas to broaden its presence in specialty chemicals and advanced materials.Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move.
