New state laws for a new school year
By EVA-MARIE AYALA Giving middle-schoolers pedometers and having freshmen study parental responsibilities are some of the new statewide efforts this school year. Here are some changes coming to area schools this school year:Getting physicalSchools must add more vigorous physical activity to the lives of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders.State law now requires that those students get 30 minutes a day, 125 minutes a week or 225 minutes over two weeks for four semesters.Since school districts’ schedules vary widely, districts are implementing the mandate in different ways.Fort Worth district schools, for example, are creating a yearlong class for sixth-graders that alternates weeks between health lessons and physical activity. The district had required one semester of health and one semester of physical education in sixth grade."That meant students would end up being active for just one semester," said Georgi Roberts, the district’s health and physical education director. "This way they are active the whole year. The intent of the legislation was to put physical education requirements back into middle schools, and that’s good."The district will give middle-schoolers pedometers this year to help measure how much exercise they get, Roberts said.Parent prepHigh schools must now include a parental awareness class along with lessons on acne and nutrition in health classes.State law requires teens to participate in Parenting and Paternity Awareness, a Texas attorney general’s program that teaches students about parental rights and responsibilities, such as child support laws and visitation rights. The attorney general’s office collects child support for families. The lessons will be included in health classes usually taught in ninth grade."This will help prepare our future parents so they will know how to help each other and raise a child together even if a relationship doesn’t work out," said O.J. Kemp, Arlington’s assistant athletic director for health and physical education.Bible classesHigh schools can now offer Bible classes. Some schools had offered such classes, which followed history or English curriculum guidelines. In 2007, state law called for a more specific curriculum for the course. This summer, the state Board of Education established loose guidelines stating that the courses must be on the Bible as history or literature and may not promote or disparage any faith.Few districts statewide plan to offer the class this fall if they have not done so before, state officials said. The Mansfield school district will offer the class for the first time at Mansfield High School, but the class will be open to students at all four district high schools.
