Mukasey stresses defense of voters' rights
The nation's top prosecutor said Wednesday that politics should have no role in investigations into violations of voters' rights.U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey said a top priority of his remaining tenure is to ensure the November elections run smoothly, so Americans have confidence in the results. The process can't involve politics, despite the "obvious dangers" of being drawn in, he said, since elections are political events."We have to do everything in our power to resist that, to ensure that each of our decisions is driven by what the law and facts require and only by that. Politics must play no role in the decision of investigations or prosecutors as to any investigation or criminal charges," Mukasey told more than 200 federal prosecutors and FBI agents in Columbia.
