Tuition to dramatically increase for some students
Students planning to attend one of Florida's public universities this fall will have to shell out between 6 and 15 percent more money to pay for tuition, according to administrators from various universities. The cost hike is attributed, in part, to Gov. Charlie Crist's approval of a 6-percent increase. But additional costs, totaling more than $208 per class hour, can be traced back to a 2007 law that said Florida State University and University of Florida can charge extra tuition that will help pay for the growth of public institutions. FSU and FAMU administrators weigh-in on budget cuts
Technology advances at Florida A&M won't be completed. Fewer classes will be offered. And graduate or teaching-assistant jobs will have to be decreased, FAMU's Chief Financial Officer Teresa Hardee said. The cutbacks are needed so that FAMU complies with the latest budget cuts requested by Gov. Charlie Crist. Crist requested a 1-percent decrease per quarter for all state agencies in late June. That translates to about $4.8 million from FAMU's $400 million budget, Hardee said. For Florida State University, the request means losing about $13.5 million from the institution's coffers. FSU administrators already approved a budget in June that allowed for them to cut $10 million, said Ralph Alvarez, FSU's associate vice president for financial services. Trustees approval was made in anticipation of further budget cuts. That leaves about $3.5 million that still needs to be cut."Our president anticipated having additional cuts in the two-year financial plan," Alvarez said of FSU President T.K. Wetherell. "At this point, it's too early to take further actions. There's so much uncertainty. We're covered until our (trustee) meeting in September."Return to Tallahassee.com for more details.
